Cinematographer Lennert Hillege makes the most of quaint Dutch town settings and Friesland's lovely isolation, where the sea is kept at bay even as it threatens to swamp everything. Go to Full Review

Remember the name Guido van Driel. The bold Dutch director makes an auspicious debut with The Resurrection Of A Bastard, a brutally violent and haunting crime movie adapted from his own graphic novel. Go to Full Review

Revisionist male screen images meant to blame the victimizer. But this minimalist macho miscreant mayhem, part Tarantino, part existential live action looney toons, is a metaphysical case of too little information leaving far too much to the imagination. Go to Full Review

Helped along by a sharp visual style, Bastard is slightly slow and enigmatic, but surefooted enough to keep you intrigued right up to its surprisingly sincere finale. Go to Full Review

03/21/2014 To slow , kinda boring ...don't buy See more 08/24/2013 A film by Dutch filmmaker Guido van Driel is starring Yorick van Wageningen, Juda Goslinga, and Goua Robert Grovogui; it is one of three films in which Jeroen Willems, who died in 2012, appears posthumously. De wederopstanding van een klootzak (The Resurrection of a Bastard (Asshole)) is not an everyday crime drama, and that could be a reason it was selected to open the 2013 International Film Festival in Rotterdam. Guido van Driel is actually a cartoonist from Zaandam, and when he was assigned a graphic novel related to Saint Boniface, on the occasion of the 1250 anniversary of his martyrdom in Dokkum, he thought that this could be a very good opportunity to make a film. He co-wrote the screenplay with Bas Blokker based on his book and what I saw was his first movie! Lovely piece of work with multiple layered interwoven story. Some of the violence would earn R rating in most of the Western countries, but it was probably important to show the contrast of the personality and the change of Ronnie, the violent criminal from Amsterdam. If you like a little bit of mystery, don't mind extreme violence, and you want to enjoy excellent acting, check out this Dutch movie. See more Read all reviews
