Clarisse Loughrey Independent (UK) The result feels a little empty. The humour relies almost entirely on the contrast between the film's dark themes and humdrum British life, as everyone negotiates life-and-death matters with steadfast politeness. Rated: 2/5 May 20, 2019 Full Review Frank Scheck Hollywood Reporter It's only Tom Wilkinson's typically expert performance that saves Dead in a Week (Or Your Money Back) from having to live up to its subtitled bargain with moviegoers. Nov 30, 2018 Full Review Noel Murray Los Angeles Times "Dead in a Week" strains too hard to find the lighter side of professional murder - like a Coen brothers version of "John Wick," but without the inspired touch of either. Nov 29, 2018 Full Review Richard Crouse Richard Crouse The farcical, occasionally over-the-top treatment Edmunds applies to death and dying is tempered somewhat by Wilkinson's performance as the genial but deadly Leslie. Rated: 3/5 Feb 3, 2021 Full Review Zehra Phelan Flavourmag There is a compassionate and highly amusing investment in Edmunds characters but the picture does have its lull in entertainment value at times. Overall, there is a life-affirming message to be learnt from the darkest of holes. Rated: 3/5 Jul 27, 2020 Full Review Katie Hogan She Likes Movies With a great cast of characters and actors, a hitman comedy about suicide is an unexpected bright light amongst the gritty despressing British film landscape. Emily S I really don't get why the overall ratings for this witty little indie film are so low. It's charming, darkly funny, and manages to tackle a very difficult topic with compassion and humor. Plus it has fantastic peformances from Tom Wilkinson, Aneurin Barnard, and Christopher Eccleston. Wilkinson and Barnard's chemistry is particularly good, and hilarious considering the circumstance they've entangled themselves in together. Yes, it requires a bit of suspension of disbelief, but what do you want from a slightly absurdist comedy? I love this movie and find it so enjoyable that I've rewatched it several times. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/11/24 Full Review Felix T Accurate while being funny. You all know you are thinking like this, but you just won't admit it. I didn't want it to end. If you realize that life is absurd and the only real meaning is what we give it, then you'll enjoy this movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/21/24 Full Review Jessica M A brilliantly funny script brought to life by an excellent cast, with the likes of Tom Wilkinson and Christopher Eccleston bringing their usual depth and humour. I can't understand why so many have given poor reviews when there is so much to recommend this film. From the premise (a suicidal man unlucky in his attempts hiring an assassin to help him succeed) to the wonderful one liners, their delivery and the overall warmth and wit of the film, it is so enjoyably far-fetched and encompasses tragedy, comedy and resolution in 90 packed minutes. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/23/23 Full Review Sean M Decent film, but a bit mediocre. Worth a casual watch. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/04/23 Full Review martina n I loved it. Dark and witty, the protagonist as dreary as the British weather drags his feet through a plot that's twisting his guts almost literally. He has lost the will to live and almost feels superhuman as a result of his failings in suicide. When he meets an elderly assassin on the brink of retiring at a bridge notorious for suicidal visitors. Knowing that many people are too afraid to follow through, the man gives them his card and an option most would never even conceive- take out a hit on yourself. He even has a brochure of possible ways to go. Love always comes into ones life when its least expected, changing the course and tempo of the movie- suddenly he wants to live... but can he? Or is it too late? Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Gianmarco R Beautiful and really funny film with a moral about the meaning of life that is very banal but effective. The film is so entertaining and almost manages to inspire in a truly beautiful and effective way. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/25/22 Full Review Read all reviews
