Richard Roeper Chicago Sun-Times The sharp screenplay by Josh Wilcox nails the poker lexicon yet never gets so deep in the weeds that the non-player would be lost. Rated: 3/4 Sep 18, 2024 Full Review Peter Sobczynski RogerEbert.com It isn’t necessarily a bad movie, just a mediocre one that only reminds you of all the better films it aspires to be like. Rated: 2/4 Sep 13, 2024 Full Review Mikal CG Film Threat Josh Wilcox’s screenplay is what might come about if the Coen Brothers wrote a movie around the game of poker. Rated: 7/10 Apr 9, 2025 Full Review JK Sooja Common Sense Media Andy is appropriately moody and serious as a whip-smart high-stakes poker player, but his character quickly gets overshadowed by all the violence and stagey plot devices. Oct 3, 2024 Full Review Joel Copling Spectrum Culture Dead Money relies far too much on the idea that some of these characters are smarter than others, only to do any intelligence a disservice by playing this silly game with its audience. Sep 18, 2024 Full Review Rich Cline Shadows on the Wall Director Luc Walpoth plays on genre cliches to build some slick, edgy tension. But the meandering plot and fuzzy point of view make it difficult to stay involved. Rated: 2.5/5 Sep 17, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

KURTIS T How much you would like this movie will definitely depend on if you are into the underground poker scene or possible crime thrillers. I’ve been playing in underground games for the last 20 years and there have been a handful of games that have been robbed. One I was at was very similar to the starting scene of this movie where three men busted in with two of them having saw it off shotguns and another with a pistol. Scary to say the least but no at least no one got hurt, but they never caught them. We even called the cops after because it’s really not that big of a deal to be running a poker game and even underground. You can just tell the cops there is no rake and then they can’t do anything to the game host. The other game I used to play at that got robbed in a similar fashion. They got away too. I think the first game they made away with about 100 K cash and probably 200 K worth of watches and jewelry. Nowadays, most of the games are cashless and just settle up after the fact to avoid instances like this But not always. About the movie, the movie portrait, Poker specifically underground poker very well. The hands are realistic. The action is good and the storyline tells a compelling story. It’s like near perfect mix of humor, action, and intrigue in the form of a poker movie. It fall short and some spots, particularly at the end, but besides that I think it’s near perfect especially for a low budget movie, the main actor actually played on hustle casino live. Every poker player knows rounders is the quintessential Poker movie, but the hands and rounders are just so dumb. No one is ever flopping top two heads up on an ace deuce five board and folding a five because they’re worried about 34. This movie the hands are real poker hands. I gove thos movie an A-. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/29/25 Full Review Jeffrey P Never goes deep enough into the card playing or what is transpiring around it, and fails to really fit the two stories together in an original and intelligent way. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/20/25 Full Review A.L.Jude P Why so underrated when the plot was unique, cast made it the max and everything seemed much excellence ? Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/14/25 Full Review John K Some quirky characters and some action, yet feels kind of jumbled. There have been so many poker movies in recent years and this feels like a jumbled mess of all of them. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/09/25 Full Review Audience Member First great movie I have seen in a while. The critics have no clue what they are talking about. Smug as usual. It had like-able characters, comedy, action, suspense. It was a fun watch! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/02/25 Full Review RaiderRo D A guy movie and it was entertaining. Don’t know why these movies get trashed, it’s better than 85% of the trash out there Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/01/25 Full Review Read all reviews
