Dave Kehr Chicago Reader Windy, self-righteous newspaper film, written and directed by Richard Brooks in a fair reflection of the way journalists think about themselves when they've had a few too many. Jul 24, 2019 Full Review Variety Staff Variety Bogart gives a convincing performance all the way, from his constantly harassed deadline existence, his personal romantic stale-mate, and his guts in avenging the beating given his crime reporter. Jul 24, 2019 Full Review Bosley Crowther New York Times Really good newspaper pictures are few and far between. This one, while melodramatic, does all right by the trade. Jul 24, 2019 Full Review Francois Truffaut Cahiers du Cinéma [The screenplay and the characters] don’t lack for real greatness, but the merit of Richard Brooks lies more in his knowing that cinematography is the art of petty details that do not strike one, and in his proving it through constant invention. May 3, 2022 Full Review Yasser Medina Cinefilia As a film noir, it works moderately with its tale of extortion and journalistic ethics, but even by presenting a convincing role from Humphrey Bogart, it cannot correct the weaknesses of a superfluous and predictable plot. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 6/10 Mar 20, 2021 Full Review Matt Brunson Creative Loafing Although it was made over a half-century ago, expect to find plenty of topicality in Deadline - U.S.A., a sturdy drama about life at a big-city newspaper. Steve D I am not a huge Bogart fan but this one works. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/18/24 Full Review william d All the usual tropes and stereotypes found in movies about newspapers are here: the crusading newspapermen taking on corruption, the soliloquies about the importance of a free press, etc. I still liked it. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Ed M Another Bogart classic. Bogie had an unbelievable batting average. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/12/20 Full Review Audience Member This classic film is really good. Humphrey Bogart, Ethel Barrymore, Kim Hunter, Ed Begley, Warren Stevens, Paul Stewart, and the rest of the cast did a fantastic job in this movie. The plot to the movie was dramatic and entertaining. It's about doing one last moment that'll never be forgotten during troubled times. If you haven't seen this classic film yet, check it out sometime. It's a must see. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Tom M Not sure this movie would be this good without Bogart. It's great noire (dead anonymous blonde in the fur coat ... what great noire doesn't have one of those? ) and the small supporting parts by Begley, Stewart, and Barrymore make it complete. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/29/20 Full Review andy f Humphrey Bogart plays Humphrey Bogart as he always does and he does it as well as he always does. Somehow he managed to get starring roles in some of the best films of the era and this riveting movie is another. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
