Alexandra Heller-Nicholas The Blue Lenses Dearest Sister is a sad, beautiful film, while simultaneously a masterful yet shattering ghost story. Rated: 9/10 Aug 25, 2018 Full Review Justin Lowe The Hollywood Reporter The film also relies on a degree of cultural specificity that sets it apart from other examples of regionally produced horror and identifies Do, who grew up in Southern California before relocating to Laos, as a notable emerging talent. May 19, 2017 Full Review Ashley Moreno Austin Chronicle The ghost story makes for a fun and creepy horror movie -- plenty to call the film a success. But there's definitely more to it for anyone choosing to look closer. Oct 3, 2016 Full Review Andrew Heskins easternKicks.com A ghostly story that hides something far more sharp and sinister... Rated: 4/5 Sep 23, 2020 Full Review Emilie Black Cinema Crazed Dearest Sister is a film filled with good performances and interesting visuals. It's a slow burn that takes it time and feels more like a drama then horror. Rated: 4/5 Apr 17, 2020 Full Review Ashlee Blackwell Graveyard Shift Sisters Nok's journey is a human one, and the climax of such a trek leaves you a feeling of satisfaction and intensity from not only from the story, but also of what Do will do next. Audience Member I love Laos and I liked “The Long Walk” by the same director, so I gave this a try. I didn’t like it as much. It was slow going like “The Long Walk” (and like Laos itself) but I found it less haunting and more just tedious. The ending was grim but felt pointless. Not a terrible movie by any means, but it was nothing special either. I would easily recommend “The Long Walk” over this one. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/22/24 Full Review Audience Member In Dearest Sister, Mattie Do has transcended the genre and created a character study darker than its horror storyline. With excellent, authentic performances, especially from its lead actress, the film bodes well for the future of Lao filmmaking. There is an ease and thoughtfulness to Do's choices that make me excited to see what she does next, both as a cinephile and member of the Lao community. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member a slow burn, indeed. but interesting enough to hold your attention; even if i didn't have to read subtitles the whole time. i'm not sure i liked it as much as the critics/audience did overall, but it's a pretty good little thriller.
