Critics Consensus

Death At A Funeral is a rousing British farce, with enough slapstick silliness to overcome its faults.

Cliff Doerksen Time Out Rated: 2/5 Nov 18, 2011 Full Review Alonso Duralde AfterElton.com Despite a final half hour that's full of laughs, Death takes so long getting its farce gears moving that the audience becomes comatose with anticipation of mirth that is too late in coming. Feb 12, 2010 Full Review Mark Bourne Film.com It's no classic, but it did prompt me to watch those great old Ealing Alec Guinness comedies again. Mar 4, 2008 Full Review Matt Neal ABC Radio (Australia) A wonderful ensemble comedy that doesn't get the dues it deserves. Rated: 4/5 Sep 24, 2021 Full Review Ed Travis Hollywood Jesus Tudyk's comedic timing and drugged impersonations could have made the whole film, but Death at a Funeral offers a lot more laughs than just acid trips. Yuri B This movie was laugh out loud hilarious. And Alan Tudyk was absolutely hysterical, I could not stop laughing at every single thing he did... he was bloody brilliant. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/22/25 Full Review Brad S. R As close to perfect as any comedy from recent memory. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/20/25 Full Review Audience Member A classic British comedy movie which quickly became one of my favourite movies of all time. This hilarious, lightly emotional, great movie is an absolute must see. Andy Nyman as Howard is one of the funniest roles and performances ever. Alan Tudyk as Simon was hilarious and well played, he really made it impossible to not laugh with this movie. And let's not forget Uncle Alfie played by Peter Vaughan who was so chaotic and funny I couldn't hold in my histerical laughter. This really is a hilarious movie from start to finish. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/22/25 Full Review Jorge V As a good food, preparation takes time. Enjoyed a well constructed and funy movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/11/25 Full Review Suzanne A This film doesn't start as farce: Matthew McFadyen's stiff-upper-lip grief could serve a more tragic narrative. But from the moment the wrong body is revealed (still as a subtle error), it's all down hill. The opening sequences, introducing the key characters getting to the funeral, not only sets up the farcical impact of cousin Troy-the-pharmacist's psychedelic drugs hidden in a valium bottle, but also parodies the opening structure of Four Weddings and a Funeral, from which this film surely derives its title. Each actor in the ensemble cast puts in a credible picture of their own character -- the talentless and envious Daniel; the self-regarding famous novelist Robert; cousin Martha and her ne'er-do-well brother Troy, both hoping to stay the right side of their irascible father, Victor; the oleaginous Justin, who can't imagine why Martha doesn't still fancy him; the brilliantly off-his-face Simon, Martha's finance; the hypochondriac Howard (another cousin); and of course the dead father's lover, Peter, and grumpy uncle Alfie. Farce derives from their confluence, with the misappropriated bottle of pills, plus the unanticipated appearance of Peter as the dead man's erstwhile lover. At the time of its release, the farce didn't seem snappy enough, but perhaps it works better if seen as somewhat generically mixed. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/31/24 Full Review Chris M One of my favorite British comedies ever made. The cast is fantastic, led by Matthew MacFadyen and Peter Dinklage is a treat. A great farce!
