      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

It's amusing and it assembles a talented cast, but Neil LaBute's surprisingly faithful remake of the 2007 Frank Oz dramedy ultimately falls short of the original.

Engin O Hilarious movie. Really enjoyable film Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/21/23 Full Review Jeff M Don't pay attention to the negative critical and audience scores for this movie on Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb - this is one of the most enjoyable comedies I've watched in recent memory. I was shocked and delighted by how well I responded to this American remake of a 2007 British comedy, which incidentally also featured Dinklage. Frankly, it's not the sort of comedy to which I normally respond favorably - it's a bit broad and politically incorrect at times with a fair share of bathroom humor and gross-out sight gags thrown in for good measure. But in this case, everything worked beautifully. I can't remember a movie I've seen lately where the cast works so wonderfully well together, and almost each character is given at least a scene or two to shine. Everyone is going to have their own personal character and/or performance - my MVP has to be James Marsden who has never been funnier or more relaxed onscreen. That being said, there's not a false performance in the movie - this is ensemble comedy acting at its finest. Obviously, not everyone is going to respond as favorably as myself - I think it will be too over the top for some, and others may consider much of it in bad taste. But it hit my sweet spot, and I will forever be grateful to my friend and blog reader Steve Douglas for suggesting I watch this. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/10/24 Full Review Tulin B I loved this film . Easy to watch and hilarious . so mwah cliche, but very enjoyable Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/27/24 Full Review luca d A good product to pass the time, but nothing more. The cast is also of a more than decent level, but there is little depth of writing of the characters and the whole thing looks somewhat caricatured. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/05/23 Full Review Philip A I watched this on DVD, and I had high expectations given the comedic cast line up. Whilst I enjoyed some aspects of it, I found other parts slow and uninteresting. I also found the humour to fall flat at times, and on other occasions it felt forced and unnatural. I though the story needed more work, because too much time was spent at the house which became boring. I would have liked it to move on to a church, and then a cemetery, but it didn't. It wasn't the kind of funeral I had in mind, but it might be more familiar to a US audiance. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/12/23 Full Review Gareth v For a movie that is pretty much a scene for scene re-make, they have somehow managed to make a far inferior product. An achievement in it's self. Anna Smith metro.co.uk The result is as uneven as the original, albeit in different places:the drug stuff is hilarious; the toilet humour just yucky. Aug 23, 2018 Full Review Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online It's not a great movie, but far exceeds expectation and remains very true to the original film but with a clever African-American slant (which may actually make it even funnier). Rated: B+ Sep 11, 2017 Full Review Martin Tsai Newark Star-Ledger While it isn't a shot-for-shot replica, certainly no one can accuse Hollywood of dumbing things down here. Dec 23, 2014 Full Review Rene Jordan El Nuevo Herald (Miami) The only realistic thing here is the funeral because this cadaver arrived at the multiplex already in an advanced state of rigor mortis on the edge of putrefaction. [Full review in Spanish] Oct 26, 2022 Full Review Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com Most likely to satisfy those unfamiliar with the vastly superior 2006 original and/or those who simply embrace all things Chris Rock or Martin Lawrence. Rated: 2.5/4.0 Sep 5, 2020 Full Review Brigit Grant Daily Express (UK) It remains a mystery to me how a street-smart, wise-cracking comic of Chris Rock's pedigree failed to see the laughter limitations of this remake of Frank Oz's British film, which was equally uninspiring.
