A sharp bit of southern Gothic storytelling with a dash of magical realism, Death Letter Blues makes for a sweaty, sultry mystery/drama full of soul-searching and seething over – the nature of us – good and bad. Go to Full Review

A potently atmospheric slice of Southern noir...Toying subtly with genre conventions, writer/directors Strack Azar & Michael Stevantoni weave an intriguing, beguiling scenario. Go to Full Review

A smart, visually rich, and beautifully crafted indie gem about grappling with the past and confronting truths we’d rather ignore. Go to Full Review

Robyn M Sep 27 I recently watched Death Letter Blues and was blown away by this film—a riveting and complex plot, the layers of the intersecting stories weave together in a dynamic and compelling way, right until the last frame of the film.  Sherman Alexei is fabulous as the central character of the priest, grappling with morality while dealing with the various people who cross his path and enter his life.  There is a mysterious death of a young man that drives the plot, but it's in the human relationships as each grapples with this event that makes this film so intriguing.  I had to see this film again, and appreciated it all the more the second time!  The art direction is superb—so beautifully crafted, and so brilliant in the way the themes of the film are accentuated through the choice of each shot.  This is storytelling at its best—fine acting, engrossing plot, sophisticated camera work, fabulous sound and music choices. The fact that these filmmakers are so early in their careers is astounding.  This is a mature piece of work, and I look forward to what they will do next.  See more Karen S Sep 1 A beautifully crafted, suspensful drama that kept me on the edge of my seat! I wish more movies had this type of masterful pacing and consistent acting, telling an intricate story about small-town lives that keeps things on slow broil. If only it moved less deliberately and featured themes that congealed more readily. See more Robert S Aug 17 This independent Gothic mystery, skillfully directed and written by Michael Stevantoni and Strack Azar, kept my attention right to the end. I love films that are unpredictable, suspenseful, and leave me thinking about life, how we are all connected, and how one action can lead to another, like a house of cards, not so easily constructed, yet easily knocked down by one careless move. This is a story of a priest in the deep south, played so well by Sherman Augustus, who has to confront his own mortality and make sense of the visions that haunt him. Add to that a feral boy, whose very existence poses challenges for the priest and those who care for him. This film left me thinking about the choices we make in life and the part faith plays in it. Highly recommended. See more Eric V Aug 16 Stumbled upon this gem of a film and was thoroughly impressed and charmed by it. Well acted, beautifully shot, and very engaging. Loved the ensemble cast and felt like these characters were authentic and real. Hope to see more from these filmmakers in the future! Also had some of the most incredible locations I have seen in a movie with beautiful shots that really brought them to life. See more Read all reviews
