      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Death Proof may feel somewhat minor in the context of Tarantino's larger filmography, but on its own merits, it packs just enough of a wallop to deliver sufficiently high-octane grindhouse goods.

Alec C Get ready for a slaughter-fest on the streets, with no time to pump the brakes! Stuntman Mike is a serial killer known for causing traffic accidents to kill his victims, but he unfortunately gets more then he bargains for when he targets three stuntwomen who are not about to be taken down so easily. An intense thrill-seeker from start to finish, this film makes it clear that driving can be both dangerous, but so delightfully deranged! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/20/24 Full Review Zach Z Scary but I enjoyed this movie. Fun. Gruesome. Very good. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/18/24 Full Review Matt H Hated this when Grindhouse was released and just re-watched it to see if my opinion changed over 15 years later: Nope. Still hate it. It's the worst of Tarantino's impulses distilled into nearly TWO hours of stilted "cool" dialogue and endless references to better movies. It's all an excuse to set up a cool stunt with Zoe Bell (who chews with her mouth open in a diner scene). Kurt Russell and the cool stolen music are the ONLY reasons anyone would want to watch this string of terrible "clever" monologues. He somehow made Rosario Dawson awful in it and I LOVE her. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/14/24 Full Review Jimi L Okay, first and foremost, I cannot believe that Death Proof got such a low rating from Rotten tomato critics as well as the audience. That really burns my butt. If you come to think of it even Quentin Tarantino says that was his worst movie. I still don't get it. That movie was without any CGI, the car crashes and racing scenes, bumping into one another was filmed old school 70's style. Yes, the movie was slow at first but that was what made it so good, the buildup, and the second half of the movie is worth watching over and over again. I give it a 100% because I am a good film critic. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/12/24 Full Review Audience Member Tarantino claims it’s the worst movie he’s ever made but I think it’s genius! Yes there’s not really a plot but it was meant to be that way. I feel this was the role Kurt was born to play! It’s fun! It’s gory! It’s sexy! What more do you want in a movie?? Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/06/24 Full Review KB B Overall it had lots of action but a pretty senseless, underdeveloped plot. I can't recommend it and would never watch it again. Paul Byrnes Sydney Morning Herald Death Proof is superbly made. There's a terrible tension watching these beautiful and spirited young women getting too close to the flame, followed by enormous relief when the mood changes in the second story. Rated: 3.5/4 Nov 17, 2007 Full Review Derek Malcolm London Evening Standard The dialogue with which Tarantino is usually adept is disastrously clunky, the filmmaking largely without flair and even the apeing of the smears and scratches of the schlock originals seems ridiculous. Rated: 1/5 Sep 21, 2007 Full Review Anthony Quinn Independent (UK) With its scratchy print, jerky editing and retro title sequence, Quentin Tarantino's fifth film bends over backwards to establish its Seventies sexploitation-flick credentials. Rated: 3/5 Sep 21, 2007 Full Review John Brhel Vague Visages Death Proof is too singularly grindhouse, but it works as a fun, trashy flick, and a cool female empowerment story. Jun 5, 2023 Full Review Emiliano Basile EscribiendoCine What's seemingly irrelevant acquires interest in Tarantino's troubled waters, dilating time to hit you at the right moment. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 8/10 Jan 18, 2023 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies Despite it’s throwback cinema bells and whistles, a pretty good first half, and a really fun Kurt Russell performance, the movie ends up losing steam, and the second half can’t maintain the spark of the first 45 minutes or so.
