Stuntman Mike (Kurt Russell) is a professional body double who likes to take unsuspecting women for deadly drives in his free time. He has doctored his car for maximum impact; when Mike purposely causes wrecks, the bodies pile up while he walks away with barely a scratch. The insane Mike may be in over his head, though, when he targets a tough group of female friends, including real-life stuntwoman Zoe Bell (who served as Uma Thurman's double in "Kill Bill"), who plays herself.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Death Proof may feel somewhat minor in the context of Tarantino's larger filmography, but on its own merits, it packs just enough of a wallop to deliver sufficiently high-octane grindhouse goods.

Paul Byrnes Sydney Morning Herald Death Proof is superbly made. There's a terrible tension watching these beautiful and spirited young women getting too close to the flame, followed by enormous relief when the mood changes in the second story. Rated: 3.5/4 Nov 17, 2007 Full Review Derek Malcolm London Evening Standard The dialogue with which Tarantino is usually adept is disastrously clunky, the filmmaking largely without flair and even the apeing of the smears and scratches of the schlock originals seems ridiculous. Rated: 1/5 Sep 21, 2007 Full Review Anthony Quinn Independent (UK) With its scratchy print, jerky editing and retro title sequence, Quentin Tarantino's fifth film bends over backwards to establish its Seventies sexploitation-flick credentials. Rated: 3/5 Sep 21, 2007 Full Review Trace Thurman Horror Queers Podcast Deliberately paced but never boring, Tarantino's half of the 'Grindhouse" double bill builds to an adrenaline-pumping climax. Rated: 4/5 Jan 14, 2025 Full Review Joe Lipsett Horror Queers Podcast While not all of the female characters are fully fleshed out, the feminist message in Tarantino's car chase movie is impossible to overlook, especially with that satisfying and cathartic final freeze frame. Rated: 4/5 Jan 9, 2025 Full Review Gayle Sequeira BFI The two halves of Death Proof each conclude with a superb car sequence: one a crash, the other a chase; one at night, the other at daytime; one sickening, the other supremely satisfying. Isa B I love Quentin Tarantino's cameo in Death Proof as Warren. The camera work and artsy editing create a mesmerizing viewing experience. Quentin personally scratched the film to give it that dated look. I love it! Admittedly, this is the worst film that Quentin Tarantino has ever made. I don't disagree with that statement, however, I do strongly state that just because this is his worst film, doesn't make it a bad film. I think it's rather good actually, in fact, I think Quentin created exactly what he intended to. This is very much the 1980s slasher film vibe. Those are not great films, at best, they are good movies. Entertaining to watch, with annoying characters and their lengthy dialog, which serves to make the audience look forward to their potential demise. The dialog is great, by the way, as it was written by the master. The soundtrack is nice too. Kurt Russell is terrific as Stunt Man Mike. He has the awesome car and the bad boy scar. A perfect 1980s style movie villain. I love when he breaks the 4th wall at the 45 minute mark. Rose McGowan was magnificent in her role as Pam. I will say, I enjoy the first group more than the second. I find the story of the original group to be a little more entertaining and the acting is a bit better. That segment of the film also doesn't have so much of the scratched up look. I still like the second group, and the film as a whole, is a good one. The ending is appropriately over-the-top. I highly recommend this picture. 85/100 Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/13/24 Full Review Braven B IT'S A HIT!!! Death proof is that girl and i love every second Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/29/24 Full Review Robert B Piss poor, written by a teenager. Crap film that you wish you hadn't wasted your time on. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/26/24 Full Review Jordan H This is a really COOL film, it oozes coolness, and Stuntman Mike is IMO an iconic villain or at least very close to it. It’s Tarantino’s take on the slasher film genre, so if you like slashers, and especially if you like slashers AND Tarantino, you are gonna enjoy this movie. Is it Tarantino’s best film? No, but not because of its general quality, this is a GREAT film — unlike The Hateful Eight, for example — but he has other great films that are at the same time much more unique/special than this one is. It’s nowhere near being as unique/special as Pulp Fiction or Inglorious Basterds, or Django Unchained, or Kill Bill…but this is a great film. I really hope this one eventually gets a 4k release too. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/24/24 Full Review Nick R It's definitely not Tarantino's best and is much simpler and more dumbed down than his best works. But 'Death Proof' is honestly still a lot of fun and has a great ending. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/28/24 Full Review Audience Member I’ve watched the film many times and continue to be delighted by its shameless sexuality in the first act that evolves into a revenge scene that’s both exciting and satisfying. It might not be for everyone, but I love it. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/06/24 Full Review Read all reviews
