Stuntman Mike (Kurt Russell) is a professional body double who likes to take unsuspecting women for deadly drives in his free time. He has doctored his car for maximum impact; when Mike purposely causes wrecks, the bodies pile up while he walks away with barely a scratch. The insane Mike may be in over his head, though, when he targets a tough group of female friends, including real-life stuntwoman Zoe Bell (who served as Uma Thurman's double in "Kill Bill"), who plays herself.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Death Proof may feel somewhat minor in the context of Tarantino's larger filmography, but on its own merits, it packs just enough of a wallop to deliver sufficiently high-octane grindhouse goods.

Death Proof is superbly made. There's a terrible tension watching these beautiful and spirited young women getting too close to the flame, followed by enormous relief when the mood changes in the second story. Go to Full Review

The dialogue with which Tarantino is usually adept is disastrously clunky, the filmmaking largely without flair and even the apeing of the smears and scratches of the schlock originals seems ridiculous. Go to Full Review

With its scratchy print, jerky editing and retro title sequence, Quentin Tarantino's fifth film bends over backwards to establish its Seventies sexploitation-flick credentials. Go to Full Review

Deliberately paced but never boring, Tarantino's half of the 'Grindhouse" double bill builds to an adrenaline-pumping climax. Go to Full Review

While not all of the female characters are fully fleshed out, the feminist message in Tarantino's car chase movie is impossible to overlook, especially with that satisfying and cathartic final freeze frame. Go to Full Review
Gayle Sequeira BFI 11/17/2024
The two halves of Death Proof each conclude with a superb car sequence: one a crash, the other a chase; one at night, the other at daytime; one sickening, the other supremely satisfying. Go to Full Review

Max D @Gwenpool 1d One of my first movie I watched for Tarantino, the idea of a crazy guy killing girls with his car it’s kinda crazy but funny Definitely I would be watching this again See more Some G 5d its one of those movies ... its so scary and real and seems like a true story.reminds me of hostel 2 . See more Jace T @CineChamber Nov 29 I had somehow only seen Planet Terror and not Death Proof as a part of the Grindhouse double feature. Maybe I didn't realize there were 2 movies when I watched it when I was younger. Either way, Death Proof is honestly a ton of fun and subverted my expectation quite a bit. I wasn't sure what to think about it at first, but the end of it really kicks into gear and has a rewarding ending. Very recommended. See more Maksim S Nov 2 Stylish, but Slightly Flat. Death Proof is Quentin Tarantino’s love letter to grindhouse and exploitation cinema, full of long takes, dialogue-heavy scenes, and over-the-top car chases. While it captures the aesthetic and bravado of the genre, the pacing sometimes drags, and the story feels thinner than Tarantino’s best work. Kurt Russell delivers his usual charm as the menacing stuntman, and the climactic car sequences are exhilarating, yet the film never quite sustains momentum or tension. It’s an affectionate homage with flashes of brilliance, but ultimately a lesser, uneven entry in Tarantino’s filmography — stylish, fun in parts, yet leaving you wanting more. See more Greg C Oct 25 Just watched this again and it didn't age well. Really slow moving, characters that mean nothing and just Quentin thinking he's being smart and witty. I do love his other films though See more Lucia di L Oct 9 I found it rather boring. Not much action in the movie. See more Read all reviews
