Critics Consensus

Death Wish is little more than a rote retelling that lacks the grit and conviction of the original -- and also suffers from spectacularly bad timing.

Ben Sachs Chicago Reader The street violence is staged with such disgusting levity that any attempt at thematic complexity seems purely for show. Mar 9, 2020 Full Review Tara Brady Irish Times While Death Wish doubles as a commercial for the gun lobby, its alt-right posturing is undermined by its uneven, head-scratching tone. Rated: 2/5 Apr 13, 2018 Full Review Andrew Lowry Empire Magazine This is a film too embarrassed to be what it is. And shorn of capes and costumes, vigilantism is pretty ugly. Rated: 2/5 Apr 9, 2018 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review The wildly miscalculated release of this film is only matched by its mindless aggression. Rated: 1/4 Mar 14, 2022 Full Review Drew Dietsch FANDOM A morose and uneventful by-the-numbers remake that doesn't go nearly as far as it needs to. Rated: 1/5 Dec 29, 2021 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy The good news: Despite all the worries that this would be nothing more than an alt-right wet dream in which Bruce Willis guns down scores of blacks and Muslims, the film is actually restrained in such matters. The bad news: It still isn't very good. Rated: 2/4 Aug 10, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Peter B Unfortunately the professional critics watch so many movies that their palates become jaded and they can’t recognise a decent thriller when they see one. That’s what this film is : a very decent thriller that held my attention to the end. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/20/25 Full Review Jack M It lacks the grittiness and over the top violence of the original, and doesn't do justice to Eli Roth's reputation. Decent action movie, but unfortunately nothing special. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/19/25 Full Review Bronwyn D Bruce Willis did a good job playing Paul Kersey. Pretty good Remake of one of the Coolest movies. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/05/25 Full Review bob d reviewers are mad a white man took vengeance on people who broke into his home and killed his wife and almost his daughter, American politics right there Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/26/24 Full Review Jay W This movie makes the worst mistake a "Death Wish" movie can make: they try to make the movie about something. Understand, "Death Wish" was at its best when it was just a cinematic video game. In "Death Wish 3" 126 people are killed. In this movie, Willis doesn't do any "Death Wishing" until over 40 minutes into the film. When the movie tries to bring in some real-world talk about gun violence and vigilante justice, it does not fit into this story. The same movie where a YouTube video about showing a man murder 2 people goes viral. But on the positive side, the movie has a good supporting cast. Bruce Willis might just be going through the motions, but everyone else is here to play. Eli Roth's odd comedy senses still shine through in a few scenes. I just Death Wish this was more fun. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/20/24 Full Review Jelisije J Not a bad reboot but not the greatest either. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/13/24 Full Review Read all reviews
