Steve D Not a lot here besides the cast. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/18/24 Full Review Bob W The photography and camera angles say noir, the deeply flawed characters say noir, but the story plot and setting mostly say drama. Don't expect gangsters, crooked cops, and gritty streets, this movie is a post-war love triangle among elite classical musicians. Without giving away spoilers, there is one significant crime that occurs near the end of the film. What pulled this movie along was the excellent acting by Bette Davis, Paul Henreid, and ~especially~ Claude Rains. Outstanding in that aspect. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/28/23 Full Review Aldo G Director Irving Rapper and cinematographer Ernest Haller visualize the story beautifully and I think art director Anton Grot deserves mention, too. He and Haller had worked to great results before, notable Mildred Pierce. Claude Rains steals every scene and unfortunately there's little chemistry with Bette Davis and Paul Henreid. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Well, the classic score is darn good. The plot's hokey, maybe in '46 the male roles were believable, Bette Davis shows us she can play a wholesale nut-case better than most. But really , the biggest problem with this one is its poor editing--it runs on and on and when it finally gets to its climax and ending it just doesn't 'cut' it well at all. I felt: I watched ALL THAT and THAT'S all we get ?!?!?!? Skip. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review deke p 1946 BETTE still beautiful & great actress. CLAUD RAINES iconic, brilliant in his role. Amazing a story about a love triangle between a SYMPHONY orchestra conductor and a Concert CELLIST. Don't recall ever hearing of it until saw on THE MOVIE CHANNEL 13.3 BETTE DAVIS ICON=athon about March 2021. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Deception features the reassembled triumvirate from Now, Voyager of Davis, Rains, and Henreid where the first two are fighting a battle of manipulation in which the third becomes an unwitting pawn. All three play their parts well and are definitely most responsible for any enjoyment I had here but the film never really takes a firm grip on me and I unfortunately wasn't able to become too absorbed in this story. My MVP easily goes to Rains here, which is an upset in a film costarring Davis. This was also apparently the first Bette Davis picture the studio lost money on. *Binging Bette Davis #13 Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Rated: B Aug 4, 2010 Full Review Emanuel Levy EmanuelLevy.Com While not one of Davis vantage melodramas, it's worth seeing this preposterously plotted romance with Davis as a music teacher, torn between older mentor Claude Rains and Holocaust survivor-lover Paul Henreid as a sampler of the era's woman's picture.
