While not one of Davis vantage melodramas, it's worth seeing this preposterously plotted romance with Davis as a music teacher, torn between older mentor Claude Rains and Holocaust survivor-lover Paul Henreid as a sampler of the era's woman's picture. Go to Full Review

Alain E @AlainE Nov 12 Actually this is much better than I expected. Bette Davis is excellent except when she is photographed in close ups with some type of soft filter or vaseline on the lens, that softens the image, and then we see the other person she is having a conversation with, totally sharp. Claude Rains is very good as well and when imaged from a distance directing the orchestra looks a little like Leonard Bernstein. The famous cello concert itself is in my opinion a piece of crap, but photography is good and it would have been better with fewer projected shadows. See more acsdoug D @acsdoug 08/02/2024 Ah, the thrilling, dangerous world of classical music. Seriously, this is mainly just a soap opera involving classical musicians and composers. It's great a great cast though. Bette Davis is her usual stellar self, Claude Rains is delightfully urbane and sleazy at the same time, and Paul Henreid does some excellent fake cello playing. Worth a watch. See more Steve D 01/18/2024 Not a lot here besides the cast. See more Bob W 11/08/2023 The photography and camera angles say noir, the deeply flawed characters say noir, but the story plot and setting mostly say drama. Don't expect gangsters, crooked cops, and gritty streets, this movie is a post-war love triangle among elite classical musicians. Without giving away spoilers, there is one significant crime that occurs near the end of the film. What pulled this movie along was the excellent acting by Bette Davis, Paul Henreid, and ~especially~ Claude Rains. Outstanding in that aspect. See more Aldo G 05/18/2023 Director Irving Rapper and cinematographer Ernest Haller visualize the story beautifully and I think art director Anton Grot deserves mention, too. He and Haller had worked to great results before, notable Mildred Pierce. Claude Rains steals every scene and unfortunately there's little chemistry with Bette Davis and Paul Henreid.
