Audience Member The last of MGM's lavish composer biographies, this time the life of Sigmund Romberg; a notch above many of the others of its ilk, thanks mostly to the mugging of star Jose Ferrer, who sings and dances and brings some much-needed energy to the film; musical highlights include Ferrer and opera star Helen Traubel performing the "Leg of Mutton;" Cyd Charisse and James Mitchell in a passionate dance to "One Alone;" Ann Miller tap-dancing to "It;" and Gene Kelly and his brother Fred doing "I Love to Go Swimmin' with Women." Ferrer's then-wife, Rosemary Clooney, performs briefly with him to the song "Mr. & Mrs." Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member I finally get Anna Russell's joke about Josà (C) Ferrer. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review s r Forced and contrived, but still it was a relatively upbeat and lively musical where you are thrown from situation to song and back. Fantastic score, but I assume it all came from his great works. I had never heard of Romberg, so it was a informative yet drastically melodramatic; a typical musical with a weak plot. The dubbing was painfully distracting at times. Good thing it was rated R on Flixster. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Great music with some terrifically staged and performed numbers but has several heavy doses of schmaltz thrown in, particularly towards the ending. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Tedious plotline but great musical numbers with an assortment of MGM's musical stars of the mid-1950s. Ann Miller's "It" is a highlight as is the torridly erotic "Desert Song" number with Cyd Charisse and James Mitchell. Skip the plot and go for the numbers on the DVD! Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Surprising entertaining despite its somewhat stilted story. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Read all reviews
