Critics Consensus

Viewers desperately seeking a new erotic thriller might find Deep Water worth a dip, but it's far from director Adrian Lyne's best work.

Between the unlikable characters, a story that's mostly pretty dull, and an annoying ending, it's hard to pick Deep Water's worst quality.

Christina Newland iNews.co.uk It's certainly pleasurable, but this modern Fatal Attraction is too prudish to satisfy. Rated: 3/5 Sep 19, 2024 Full Review Scaachi Koul BuzzFeed News Honestly, reflecting on this movie for more than five minutes will make the whole thing melt in your hands, so it’s best not to consider it for too long. Apr 7, 2022 Full Review Rex Reed Observer OK, it’s not Body Heat.  But it kept my motor running. Rated: 3/4 Mar 31, 2022 Full Review Jai Arjun Singh Firstpost Around halfway through, as the ambiguity of the early scenes is lost, and we get a clearer sense of what exactly is happening, Deep Water also becomes more predictable, and refuses to gather steam as a thriller. Rated: 2.5/5 Aug 27, 2024 Full Review Yasmine Kandil Discussing Film Even if these types of thrillers are your guilty pleasure, no matter how bad or predictable they may be, forcing yourself through two hours of lifeless and uninspired writing and performances of this sort is simply not worth it. Rated: 1/5 Jul 17, 2024 Full Review Kevin Slane Boston.com “Deep Water” can be a bit shallow and silly at times. But the basic thrills and surprising laughs it provides are more than enough to make for an entertaining evening. Rated: 2.5/4 Aug 9, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member The cinematography was quite nice, but it might also be largely because of Ana de Armas. It is probably a bit shallow of me, but I really cannot deny that she’s the main reason I was able to keep my eyes on the screen. So beautiful, aesthetically pleasing, and alluring with such a compelling presence. Oh, to be blessed with the ability to command attention with your mere expressions! However, we also cannot deny that this film has diverted quite a bit from the book. Obviously, the modernisation of it was well-appreciated from my end, but it certainly left me perplexed with a flurry of questions. As in, “Is this really normal?”and, “What are their motivations? Why are they the way that they are?”The different ending was a welcome change for me though! But yes, a lot of details were also omitted, which made it feel like it was just a weird collection of beautifully-shot scenes sprinkled with some random ones for transition rather than an actual film. Did they do that because it’s supposed to be a thriller/mystery? Because then someone should tell the writers that suspense in film isn’t as simple as cutting out certain information and leaving it at that. You do eventually have to resolve those questions brought upon by suspense. For a thriller/mystery, it surely did not try to maintain either of those. Even the thrill of the sexual tensions were so short-lived—almost like a budding arousal that never reaches a climax. Like a person leading someone on, all that jazz. Meanwhile, the way they revealed the mystery of it all was also not too… remarkable? Haha. Honestly, all the characters were seriously unlikeable; even Ana de Armas’, probably due to the lack of personality. Absolutely love the relationship between Vic and Trix though; at least they built that one okay. Perhaps the film would have done better as a short series where there’s more room for world building? I would say, go ahead and give it a watch. Still a nice movie to pass the time especially if you’re doing stuff like chores or stationary hobbies; like, say, ironing, knitting, dishwashing, and even exercising. Just don’t expect too much of it and enjoy the show! Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/15/25 Full Review Nick G Didn't really enjoy anything about this film. After the first 20 minutes, I was convinced this was a direct rip off of Eyes Wide Shut. As the film went on, it was clear that it had a different story, but much less interesting. The set up dragged on way too long and the protagonist is very dry. I would not waste 2 hours of life watching this garbage. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/29/25 Full Review Luis M Not as Idiotic as "Gone Girl"... but close, the thing is, this movie was doing kinda OK until the very end, although there were obvious problems such as lack of a character arc for the Ben Affleck's character, lack of activity by the police, etc. (And FYI I don't care what the book says, we are rating the movie, different media and execution). The ending is terrible, it feels like the director and writers quit and the producers decided to leave it as it was instead of working on a good ending. The only good thing about this movie is, as always, ANA de Armas, she breathes interest and fun into Every movie she is in!! she is a breath of fresh air!! but not even her can save the incompetence of the writers. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/08/25 Full Review DL W Over the top but not in a good way. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/25/24 Full Review Matt S Very not bens movie at had no twist and no real story at all would not watch again glad I did not pay for this would ask for money back bad bad bad bad rate -5 Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/29/24 Full Review Roman B Stupid, slow waste of time movie.
