Critics Consensus

Delivering good old-fashioned thrills thanks to director Renny Harlin's reliable genre instincts, Deep Water is an unapologetic B-movie that swims rather than sinks.

The human drama element between the passengers provides just enough context to carry this light and predictable but garish and bloody popcorn adventure. Go to Full Review

Forget anything new. Director Renny Harlin is merely spitpolishing his same old bag of shark tricks. But the dude knows how to deliver assembly line product like nobody’s business. Go to Full Review

It prefers to spend two hours rehashing elements that even newbies to shark-based cinema will find devoid of any real inspiration. Go to Full Review

...it's all the typical "big man saves the day" actions and one-liners. However, if you can look past that (and accept that these sharks are obviously starving), then it's solid entertainment for a nice movie night at home. Go to Full Review

Deep Water is not an entirely bad picture, and there's just enough schlock to keep it mostly enjoyable. But it's also a frustrating example of Harlin's modern "good enough" mentality. Go to Full Review

Renny Harlin's disaster-movie-meets-shark-movie feels as if it time-traveled from the 1990s; everything is numbingly familiar, and worse, it takes itself far too seriously. Go to Full Review

Jason B Jun 2 Film was good enough… until the sharks show up. Clearly the film makers have never seen a shark and don’t know anything about them. This could have been an excellent film about plane crash victims trying to survive in the ocean. Instead, it’s shlock that plays on Deep Blue Sea style sharks, but with no reason for their outrageous behavior. Save yourself some money and watch it on steaming. Or better yet, just watch Deep Blue Sea. See more Aussie Koala May 29 Pretty intense, but also pretty spellbinding too! See more Mr Hollywood May 28 Disaster movie cliche. Offers nothing new. Should’ve been more fun See more Gregory May 25 Entertaining enough. Acting was rough. Story line was all over the place. The the concept was fun. See more Meghan May 22 A shark movie is always a great way to kick off the season. See more Rob B May 22 I will just say that the first half of this movie wasn’t too bad, but after the plane crash, it was a little bit silly and far-fetched. Overall, not the best movie we’ve seen in a while. See more Read all reviews
