      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Neill Blomkamp's return to low-budget, high-concept filmmaking bungles some interesting ideas, adding up to another Demonic waste of the writer-director's once-promising talent.

TheAngryDead 1 A generic posession film that is Blomkamp's worst project thus far. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/04/24 Full Review AJ F Would have been better as a film adaption of "The Evil Within" than a new, untested project with poor writing. The film address possession uniquely and how to deal with it, however it deviates from its start with a rip-off S.T.A.R.s-Vatican-esq-tactical special forces squad inserted into the narrative. Though low-budget, it has an interesting directional style with effects showing the A.I. memory world. The film forgets its narrative and premise. Story is lacking and characters are flat. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 04/23/23 Full Review Movie F Neil blomkamp had great ideas for a horror movie such as Demonic but It doesn't deliver anything good, I honestly prefer a Sequel to Chappie which sadly he canceled, talking about Not making enough money, Demonic made 366 thousands that's worse. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review RICARDO R Yeah I honestly prefer a Chappie Sequel over a Demonic Sequel. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Overall, what starts as something mysterious and promising, sadly turns into something flat, and the film takes a nosedive in the second and third acts. Performances are fine, and aspects relating to the audio and fun visuals are also great. The film's biggest letdown is its plot and development of the key character, both of which become dull and forgettable. Moments of mystery are generally predictable. Sure, there's some fun and creative ideas relating to sci-fi and horror; I just personally hoped for something stronger rather than this vague and uninteresting movie. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/11/23 Full Review Kamilla F What a pedantic movie. Right at the beginning, the clear errors of continuity already made me uncomfortable, like the characters talking at the table, and with each switch of camera, the cola-cola is full of ice, the other take it has no ice, back to the main camera, ice in it, I mean, seriously, I immediately saw it, and has anyone seen this or they don't even care?... And that's not even close to the worst part of the movie. The idea itself is good, but the script is so weak, full of expository dialogues, and this main actress who has no expression at all and only knows how to do duck beak made me give up before 1 hour of film. Mike McCahill Guardian It's cautiously compiled, competent work-for-hire, but the wild swings and grand designs of this film-maker's earlier output are sorely missed. Rated: 2/5 Aug 26, 2021 Full Review Anton Bitel Sight & Sound Stealing a trick from Tarsem Singh's The Cell (2000). Blomkamp's film uses zones constructed from the detritus of the unconscious as a way of giving cinematic form - sight and sound - to otherwise internal struggles and states. Aug 25, 2021 Full Review Brian Tallerico RogerEbert.com Demonic feels like a film made by someone who's scared of his own ideas and his own limitations. Rated: 1.5/4 Aug 20, 2021 Full Review Sarah Vincent Cambridge Day “Demonic” is yet another miss for a once promising filmmaker. Rated: 1.5/4 Aug 16, 2023 Full Review Mitchell Beaupre InSession Film With stilted acting and grueling plot mechanics that promise excitement which never comes, viewers might struggle to even make it to the film’s third act.
