Critics Consensus

Neill Blomkamp's return to low-budget, high-concept filmmaking bungles some interesting ideas, adding up to another Demonic waste of the writer-director's once-promising talent.

It's cautiously compiled, competent work-for-hire, but the wild swings and grand designs of this film-maker's earlier output are sorely missed. Go to Full Review

Stealing a trick from Tarsem Singh's The Cell (2000). Blomkamp's film uses zones constructed from the detritus of the unconscious as a way of giving cinematic form - sight and sound - to otherwise internal struggles and states. Go to Full Review

Demonic feels like a film made by someone who's scared of his own ideas and his own limitations. Go to Full Review

With stilted acting and grueling plot mechanics that promise excitement which never comes, viewers might struggle to even make it to the film’s third act. Go to Full Review

A return to a set of horror genre stereotypes that tries to reinvent demonic possessions without success. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Chris P Jan 18 Was looking forward to this, as I love Neill Blomkamp. This is one of those odd films where the overall concept was better than the film they put together. I can't specifically say why it didn't work for me only that it didn't. See more Emilliano Jr S 12/06/2024 A downgrade worst from once promising director of acclaimed movies such as Chappie, Elysium & District 9. See more Korra N 06/18/2024 I'm a stark defender for Neill Blomkamp's films, but out of everything he's done (including the recent Gran Turismo), Demonic is a bad movie I can't defend. There's a genuinely interesting plot here, but the movie squanders it for trippy visuals instead of meaningful characters & purpose. See more TheAngryDead 1 11/30/2023 A generic posession film that is Blomkamp's worst project thus far. See more RICARDO R 01/24/2023 Yeah I honestly prefer a Chappie Sequel over a Demonic Sequel. See more 01/05/2023 Overall, what starts as something mysterious and promising, sadly turns into something flat, and the film takes a nosedive in the second and third acts. Performances are fine, and aspects relating to the audio and fun visuals are also great. The film's biggest letdown is its plot and development of the key character, both of which become dull and forgettable. Moments of mystery are generally predictable. Sure, there's some fun and creative ideas relating to sci-fi and horror; I just personally hoped for something stronger rather than this vague and uninteresting movie. See more Read all reviews
