Nick O'Brien is the hard-drinking leader of the Regulators, an elite unit of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Ray Merrimen is the recently paroled leader of the Outlaws, a gang of ex-military men who use their expertise and tactical skills to evade the law. O'Brien, Merrimen and their crews soon find themselves on a direct collision course as the criminals hatch an elaborate plan for a seemingly impossible heist -- the city's Federal Reserve Bank.

Den of Thieves desperately wants to be Heat or The Killer when it grows up. Instead it's a daft, distant, drunken cousin to those pictures, but if you studiously avoid thinking about it, you can at least enjoy its moronic antics.

The complete lack of likeable characters is a problem for a heist movie - in this struggle between violent criminals and corrupt cops, we don't particularly care who wins.

Reminded me a lot of heat with the relationship between cop and robber. Pretty authentic, and pretty original. Casting did well in this one. Kept my attention the whole time, and had an actually clever ending. Not always successful when the writer puts in a twist.

DEN OF THIEVES is an odd heist film. Thoroughly hardboiled, with few if any likable characters, and a bevy of unnecessary, histrionic "character development" scenes for "Big Nick," the film gets by on its gritty realism and promise (of course) of a daring, rigorously planned heist. In that respect, with a redemptive, big reveal ending, the film does manage to pull off something almost impressive, if you make it that far.
