Critics Consensus

Den of Thieves pays energetic homage to classic heist thrillers of the past; unfortunately, it never comes close to living up to its obvious inspirations.

Stephen Romei The Australian Butler and Schreiber deliver commanding performances. They are men who could explode at any moment, at work or at home. That nonstop ticking beneath their calm exteriors fills the film with a gripping tension. Rated: 3.5/5 Feb 14, 2018 Full Review Tara Brady Irish Times Den of Thieves desperately wants to be Heat or The Killer when it grows up. Instead it's a daft, distant, drunken cousin to those pictures, but if you studiously avoid thinking about it, you can at least enjoy its moronic antics. Rated: 3/5 Feb 5, 2018 Full Review Sandra Hall Sydney Morning Herald The film's sole virtue is its finale - a complicated plot twist that sparks a belated, and brief, surge of interest. Rated: 2/5 Feb 2, 2018 Full Review Richard Crouse Richard Crouse It's one thing for the bad guys to shoot one another, but when cops place dozens of innocent people in the middle of an automatic gun battle it feels gratuitous even for a movie like this. Rated: 2/5 Feb 28, 2021 Full Review Dan Buffa KSDK News (St. Louis) The lesson is simple, ladies and gents. Don't judge a book or movie by its cover. There could be a fun toy waiting in that gift you didn't care to unwrap. Nov 10, 2020 Full Review Alex Hudson Exclaim! The complete lack of likeable characters is a problem for a heist movie - in this struggle between violent criminals and corrupt cops, we don't particularly care who wins. Neil C Perfect example of a middle of the road action movie. The super toxic masculinity of every character taints the otherwise decent heist movie, with the twist providing a stronger than usual rationale for our required, third act shoot out. It was no "Heat" (and clearly took inspiration from that classic during the shootout) but it was well shot (pun intended) and choreographed. I can't tell if Gerard Butler is a terrible actor, or a good one who has terrible taste in the movies he chooses, but his dirty cop was more convincing than his King Leonidas at least. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/23/24 Full Review Rob H This truly is an underrated film which is very similar to Heat minus the big names ! How this received 41% is crazy considering some of the garbage movies out there. Great performances! Good job to director and actors! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/20/24 Full Review William G Well okay on acting, but story line with a ex-con at a shooting range with a cop having target practice is unrealistic. The cop would have arrested him for a violation of probation on federal charges. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/18/24 Full Review Audience Member One of the best street gun shootouts ever in a movie. That ending shootout scene is constantly compared to the ending in Heat. The rest of the movie is just OK. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/02/24 Full Review Ian F This movie is highly entertaining, and among the best Heat ripoffs ever made Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/13/24 Full Review Troy J A solid heist movie. Gerard Butler character is unhinged and makes you uncomfortable in every scene. Pablo Schreiber is fantastic. You don't need to compare it to other movies. I think it stands on its own. Looking forward to DoT2! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/21/24 Full Review Read all reviews
