      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Destination Wedding reunites Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder for a sour comedy whose initially promising misanthropic twist overpowers the chemistry of its leads.

Antonio S Probably one of the best non stop dialogue movies I've ever seen. Great movie from beginning to end!!! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/24 Full Review Amanda L Stagey, verbose dialogue that somehow satisfied an itch for style. Unlikeable characters for whom I rooted with all my heart, especially near the end, as the wit yielded to deeper waters. Naturalism has its time and place, of course, but the monolithic Ryder and Reeves managed to remind me that so does high kitsch. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/05/24 Full Review Jeff M If anyone asks you for your choice of the worst romantic comedy ever made, do me a favor and watch this absolutely pathetic movie first, as I feel fairly confident your answer might change. This is truly one of the most grueling viewing experiences I can remember, and it took every ounce of self-control not to throw my iPhone through the television. I don't even know where to begin. I know Reeves and Ryder have known each other for over 25 years as they both appeared in 1992's BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA. Judging from this movie, you'd think the actors had never met - there is ZERO chemistry here. It doesn't help that the characters are repulsive and the screenplay is beyond reproach in its ineptitude. These aren't characters talking - it's an overly confident screenwriter thinking he or she is clever rather than shallow and banal. There is literally not a single honest moment of dialogue, and the actors simply aren't strong enough to overcome their horrible lines. I have enjoyed both Reeves and Ryder in the past and hope to do so in the future, but if this had been the only movie of theirs I had seen, I would avoid the rest of their filmography like the plague. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/10/24 Full Review Miss P I'm a GenX lady and have followed the careers of Reeves and Ryder since the 80s. Both have appeared in some of my favorite movies. This one has been added to that list. I love banter and miss the days when movies had high amounts of dialog. This movie is all dialog and character based. You're not supposed to like these people, that's the point. However, what they are saying are hard truths. It's uncomfortably honest. Maybe people don't want that, but I found it refreshing. It's a romcom for grownups. It also has one of the funniest and most real sex scenes ever to be put on film. I laughed out loud, which I rarely do, and rewatched the movie immediately because I knew I missed some things due to the rapid fire banter. It's a departure for Reeves and I adored it. He's not just an action guy, he's much more capable than that and I applaud Winona for going to him with this script. It was delightful. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/23/24 Full Review Kat W Giggle-fest! Keanu's character is a deeply disturbed person and I loved how broken he was. The dialogue was witty and funny. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/13/24 Full Review S R Saw this with my wife on a delta flight. It had some very well written dialogue, but the vulgar language was really off putting. There are some good moments, it that didn't offset the frustrations with the characters and their issues. It was still respectable and a reasonably well made unique movie. I don't plan on seeing it again. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Mark Kermode Kermode & Mayo's Film Review Big stars read stuff and kill the funny. May 22, 2019 Full Review Simran Hans Observer (UK) Against the odds, Reeves and Ryder sell it. Rated: 3/5 May 12, 2019 Full Review Kevin Maher Times (UK) This is, hands down, the most ridiculously overwritten film in the history of romcoms, possibly even of all movies. Rated: 1/5 May 10, 2019 Full Review M.N. Miller Ready Steady Cut Destination Wedding is the first rom-com that had me rooting for the stars’ continued celibacy and hoping they won’t procreate. Rated: 1.5 Aug 17, 2022 Full Review Andrew Gaudion VultureHound Reeves and Ryder do their best, but for the most part this is an misanthropic exercise that becomes too grating to be worthy of much ceremony. Rated: 2/5 Aug 28, 2020 Full Review CJ Sheu Review Film Review It's with the heaviest of hearts that I regretfully inform you of the sad fact that [this] "not a rom-com" rom-com starring Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder is not a good film.
