Ronald H Critical opinions on this movie are varied. Some critics really hated it. But the plot and the way it's presented are undeniably clever. No, it's not a character driven film. But that's not the intention. The story is told two different ways, simultaneously. If that sounds confusing, it's only confusing for a while until the "reveal." I also liked the reference to the 40's cult classic film Detour and the Paul Newman "Harper" poster in Tye Sheridan's bedroom. This may not be a heavy, philosophical work, but it's not stupid. It's actually quite devious, and it will hold your attention throughout. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/14/24 Full Review Jeffrey P A somewhat overstuffed crime drama with some decent character performances, a solid story, and interesting twists and turns along the way. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Hence the expression: "If it wasn't for Bad Luck, I'd have no luck at all". Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Kind of interesting take on the "closing doors" idea with two different time lines. Not really consistent and at the end I wasn't quite sure which timeline brought us to the ending but a nice ride anyway. Some multi-screen shots gives it a vintage feel and the cast is wonderful, even the adorable Bel Pawley as the most unconvincing stripper/possible hooker ever. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member I don't care what the belittling comments say to tear this movie down. I thought was a great find in an ocean of formulaic movies. We need more movies that mix it up like this one did. The acting in this film is superior. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Audience Member If you're going to interleave alternate timelines, don't randomly switch between two different Mustangs! That really confuses things and greatly distracts from what would otherwise be a solid, nicely stylised road trip thriller. Paul Byrnes Sydney Morning Herald Even with all the nods and winks, the derivations and homages, Detour is good dirty fun. Rated: 3.5/5 Jun 23, 2017 Full Review Kevin Maher Times (UK) A watchable young cast, led by Brooklyn's Emory Cohen, and some time-shifting narrative shenanigans can't quite rescue Detour from the annals of also-ran western noir. Rated: 3/5 May 25, 2017 Full Review Anna Smith Empire Magazine Sheridan, Cohen and Powley are a terrific trio in a stylish crime thriller that takes us on a trip through the seedy side of California and beyond.
