When the Duc de Richleau (Christopher Lee) and Rex Van Ryn (Leon Greene) arrive at a fashionable party thrown by de Richleau's protégé, Simon Aron (Patrick Mower), they soon realize that the party is in fact a gathering of a Satanic cult, led by the high priest Mocata (Charles Gray), that plans to initiate the beautiful Tanith (Nike Arrighi) that night. It's up to de Richleau and Van Ryn to defeat the devil-worshiping Mocata and save innocent young Tanith and the others from a terrible fate.

Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com To this day, there are scenes that send giddy chills hurtling up and down my spine every time I think about them. Rated: 3.5/4 Aug 23, 2023 Full Review Chris Bennion Times (UK) The music is shrill, the screams of the leading ladies shriller still, and the dialogue is satisfyingly hokey (”Don’t look at the eyes, Rex!”). Mar 27, 2023 Full Review Variety Staff Variety Fisher's direction makes one of the Satanic orgies a production highspot, aided by some frenzied choreography by David Toguri and apt mood music. Dec 10, 2007 Full Review Jeremy Aspinall Radio Times In a refreshing change from using monsters of lore and literature as instruments of terror, this Hammer classic harnesses unearthly forces and hellish entities like the Goat of Mendes and the Angel of Death to chill the blood. The result is riveting. Rated: 4/5 Oct 31, 2024 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins Pervasive weirdness, even if nonsensical, tends to win out in these kinds of tales; afterwards might be a different matter, but at the time, many of the concepts appear sincere. Rated: 6/10 Sep 22, 2022 Full Review Alberto Abuín Espinof The film doesn't offer the slightest respite to the viewer from the first minute, in which the main theme is directly addressed and the characters are perfectly defined by Fisher's camera. David C The only redeeming quality is it ends. Acting couldn't be more wooden if it was reshot with puppets, dialogue so stilted and editing so amateurish you actually would be forgiving in thinking it was a parody. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/11/24 Full Review Bruce W I really can’t see what so many people see in this film. I know we have to accept that it was made in 1968 so the “special effects” are not anyway near special by today’s standards but even for then seeing a spider who kept changing size I comparison to his surroundings and a horse whose hooves seemed to be dancing killed any kind of horror it was supposed to invoke. I was also left wondering how Christopher Lee managed to keep a straight face as he trotted out all kinds of mumbo jumbo that he just happened to know. At least they tried to point us in the right direction when a moment was meant to be tense by cranking up the tense music. Although this was not enough. The finale was just weird where things just happened and you had no idea why and it was left to Christopher Lee to explain what had happened because it certainly wasn’t clear to us watching. Finally it went on far too long. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/19/24 Full Review babarizam D My only disappointment is there was no naked dance, usually all satanic rituals have that element thats why they are so attractive. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/08/24 Full Review Thom G The Devil Rides Out offers an entertaining journey into the world of satanic cults, making it a very good horror film in its own right. Despite some dated special effects, it remains suspenseful, engaging, and highly enjoyable—no doubt influenced by the presence of Christopher Lee in the cast! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/05/24 Full Review g j A bit too stiff and hammy to really appeal to modern audiences. Even Lee is pretty wooden. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/11/24 Full Review S R A unique hammer film that from the get go confronts satanism. Most leave it until the end and none covered it in such depth. The melodrama was a bit much, but I enjoyed it. Saw on TCM. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/17/23 Full Review Read all reviews
