The highs and lows of a restless youth collide headlong into the concrete realities of adulthood when Leonardo, a teenager from Palermo leaves home for the first time. His studies land him in Siena, by way of London, where he clashes with his instructor, the curriculum, and most chaotically, with himself. Produced by Luca Guadagnino, Diciannove (nineteen), marks the feature filmmaking debut of writer-director Giovanni Tortorici, a bold, brash and bemusing filmmaking talent.

Sergio Burstein Los Angeles Times A work that attempts to faithfully reflect the confusion that occurs during adolescence. [Full review in Spanish] Aug 11, 2025 Full Review Robert Abele Los Angeles Times 20 is a laughably unformed time to be convinced of anything, but what Tortorici’s higgledy-piggledy debut feature makes breathlessly clear is that when you’re in the middle of it, youth is a candy-colored tornado of temptations and responsibilities. Jul 29, 2025 Full Review Bob Mondello NPR Tortorici's filmmaking veers from jittery and handheld to sweepingly panoramic, capturing the contradictions of a kid who looks to renaissance literature for the sort of moral certainty and instruction that might keep him from making... mistakes. Jul 25, 2025 Full Review Aaron Guttenplan MovieJawn Ultimately while little in Diciannove particularly stood out to me, it’s certainly a promising debut and a valuable, and occasionally unusual, addition to the canon of coming-of-age cinema. Aug 19, 2025 Full Review Chris Cassingham In Review Online One gets the sense that Leonardo’s life has no capacity to handle the youthful verve of Tortorici’s filmmaking impulses, which flit about one moment and melt between frames the next. Aug 3, 2025 Full Review Miyako Pleines Spectrum Culture Diciannove has all the ingredients for a searing art house film about toxic masculinity, but it never fully seems to know how to commit to that idea. Anthony B Coming of age as a Gen Z in Europe. London, Siena, Turin. Lovely exploration of Siena. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/04/25 Full Review Moody C It’s a pretty well made movie and some experiences during movie quite immersive like you are actually there but just not enough meat in story. It’s autobiographical which means director’s life is not as interesting as he thinks or wants to believe but it has few moments toward the end of deep thoughts that wud make a viewer ponder. In a way, it’s genius for one to be immortal by making a movie about himself with some grand flashes of exaggerated and/or made up glory but if viewership is low, it wud be as if it’s never made in the first pace. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/29/25 Full Review avner k A sensitive, well made movie that forgot to include a take-away. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/27/25 Full Review Read all reviews
