The highs and lows of a restless youth collide headlong into the concrete realities of adulthood when Leonardo, a teenager from Palermo leaves home for the first time. His studies land him in Siena, by way of London, where he clashes with his instructor, the curriculum, and most chaotically, with himself. Produced by Luca Guadagnino, Diciannove (nineteen), marks the feature filmmaking debut of writer-director Giovanni Tortorici, a bold, brash and bemusing filmmaking talent.

A work that attempts to faithfully reflect the confusion that occurs during adolescence. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review
Robert Abele Los Angeles Times Jul 29
20 is a laughably unformed time to be convinced of anything, but what Tortorici’s higgledy-piggledy debut feature makes breathlessly clear is that when you’re in the middle of it, youth is a candy-colored tornado of temptations and responsibilities. Go to Full Review
Bob Mondello NPR Jul 25
Tortorici's filmmaking veers from jittery and handheld to sweepingly panoramic, capturing the contradictions of a kid who looks to renaissance literature for the sort of moral certainty and instruction that might keep him from making... mistakes. Go to Full Review

Ultimately while little in Diciannove particularly stood out to me, it’s certainly a promising debut and a valuable, and occasionally unusual, addition to the canon of coming-of-age cinema. Go to Full Review

One gets the sense that Leonardo’s life has no capacity to handle the youthful verve of Tortorici’s filmmaking impulses, which flit about one moment and melt between frames the next. Go to Full Review

Diciannove has all the ingredients for a searing art house film about toxic masculinity, but it never fully seems to know how to commit to that idea. Go to Full Review

Anthony B Aug 4 Coming of age as a Gen Z in Europe. London, Siena, Turin. Lovely exploration of Siena. See more Moody C @MoodyC Jul 29 It’s a pretty well made movie and some experiences during movie quite immersive like you are actually there but just not enough meat in story. It’s autobiographical which means director’s life is not as interesting as he thinks or wants to believe but it has few moments toward the end of deep thoughts that wud make a viewer ponder. In a way, it’s genius for one to be immortal by making a movie about himself with some grand flashes of exaggerated and/or made up glory but if viewership is low, it wud be as if it’s never made in the first pace.
