Audience Member Seeing this early Petzold film after having seen so many of his later movies it's easy to see how he has grown and improved his skill as a director and overall filmmaker. The State I Am In is sluggish at times, with pacing issues a bit of a problem, but a bigger issue for me is a lack of development or engaging content in the parents as characters. The acting was fine, especially from young Julia Hummer. There are signs of the exceptional director Petzold would come to be in time. So some missteps in his directing infancy was to be expected. 3 stars Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member It certainly is an acquired taste but it follows an interesting family drama that is entirely unique to Germany. Christian Petzold as a methodical and observational style that can be powerful even if it is not what American audiences are often accustomed to. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Audience Member Interesting movie, ending a bit confusing but well told. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member movie follows life of 15 year old girl, who live not so ordinary life, cause her parents are probably ex-RAF members and they living underground hiding all the time... it's a good movie set in 90's i would guess, cause still were using DM not euros Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Slow moving and rather uneventful drama about a family on the run. Julia Hummer takes center stage as the rebellious teenager and does a believable job, but not a whole lot happens in this tale. Interesting from the standpoint you want to see how the story concludes. Well it does so rather abruptly, but not before you tortured through two hours of viewing. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Nice work~ Mistrust is always the main theme in his films! He is such kind of director, which would not like to speak out every detail clearly, and require audiences to observe and feel by themselves somehow. For instance, the scene which they count the money left behind... there is certain amount left, why do they need to rob again? He likes using Ambiente and images to tell stories, this is somehow a post German New Wave style. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Read all reviews
