When a landowner is killed, his seven laborers, including the foundling Lukas (Simon Schwarz), inherit his land. Yet this turn of luck for the once-oppressed workers isn't an easy transition. With no one to lead them, they struggle -- particularly when the other farmers in the valley turn against them, fearful of what this rise to power might mean among their own laborers.
