Maggie Lovitt Collider The documentary isn’t about the making of the film, it’s about the making of the filmmaker—which is a far more compelling story to pair with one of the best projects Marvel has put out in recent memory. Rated: A Nov 4, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Max A A great documentary about the directorial debut of film composer Michael Giacchino. It's less about the making of Werewolf By Night and more about Michael Giacchino's story and background, but still manages to be enjoyable, especially for non-enthusiasts of film scores — and thus not familiar with Michael Giacchino's previous work —. I truly hope to see Michael Giacchino directing again in the future. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/18/23 Full Review jacob b A different documentary than the ones under the "Marvel Studios - Assembled" line-up, the stand-alone Director by Night offers an insightful look at what it was like for renowned composer Michael Giacchino to direct his first Hollywood project while also showing us just how much passion he has for movies with old home movies of both him growing up and some delightfully cheesy Super 8 films. It does have the disadvantage of leaving the actual Werewolf by Night BTS out-of-focus but on the whole, this offered a nice change of pace from the rest of Phase 4's BTS Disney+ featurettes. I wonder if, simply because of the "Special Presentation" branding, the GOTG Holiday Special will receive the same treatment as this One-Shot story. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review MaryJo G I have adored every ASSEMBLED documentary created about Marvel movies. What a thrill to learn the behind-the-scenes backstories of these amazing films! However, Director by Night grabbed my heart from the first shots of Michael Giacchino's brother, Anthony, with their mom in the basement to the final shots of their reunion with high school friends. What a talented pair of brothers! Some parts are laugh-out-loud funny and other parts are so poignant that I wept. This is really a terrific love story from one brother to another. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/23/22 Full Review Pamela F Unlike the usual Marvel "making of" specials, this was a look at the director and had very little to do with the wonderful special, "Werewolf by Night." I could understand a look at the director's bio - his credits, his influences, etc., - but this was full of personal, old home movies, chats with the parents and completely devoid of anything contemporary to this first outing as a director. He must have done something right because the show itself is really interesting and fun but we never see much of his process or the usual backstage methods for filming. We spent our time fast forwarding through the endless Super8 teenage "Let's put on a movie" footage and scenes of him going to and from the studio. I hope Disney uses him again for projects but don't let his brother do the "Assembled" film ever again. Please. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/14/22 Full Review jay k This isn't your typical "behind the scenes" documentary, since it was made by the director's brother, its a really interesting look at how the roots of Werewolf by Night came from Michael Giacchino's childhood love of making homemade movies. For those of us that haven't been on a movie set before it also goes into the the things that might seem mundane for regular crew (like how to ring the bell to signal action and cut) but pretty interesting to a person like me (who's interested in seeing how movies are made but will probably never be on a real set).
