Critics Consensus

Clever casting can't save Dirty Dancing, a hollow remake that trips over its own good intentions.

Anne Cohen Refinery29 The craziest thing about this, let's face it, completely unnecessary and vastly inferior imposter of a film, is the ending. May 25, 2017 Full Review Brian Lowry CNN.com ABC'S Dirty Dancing remake fits snugly in a box, adding just enough appealing wrinkles to its predecessor's familiar moves to provide, if not the time of your life, for what it is a pretty enjoyable few hours. Joel H An awful Karaoke rendition of the 1987 classic. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/01/25 Full Review Ruby s i thought it was ok i had never seen the og movie but from what i saw with this movie it was pretty goood Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/25/24 Full Review Trafalgar L Lazy writing, a verbatim remake script with a twist ending and an unnecessary subplot involving Dr. and Marjorie Houseman plague this television film. If you desire to watch it please only focus on Katey Sagal's Vivian Pressman. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/18/24 Full Review steve d The dancing is uninspiring but most of the updates work really well. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review May L If you're thinking of watching the new Dirty Dancing... Don't. Warning: Spoilers The original should have NEVER been remade, it is perfect the way it is. The cast was horrible. The new actors do not have the same vibes at all. Abigail as baby...? Colt Prattes as Johnny? No. Patrick and Jennifer didn't get along IRL, and they had so much charisma! I didn't like most of the cast, but I didn't hate Sarah as Lisa. Although, I think Sarah should have been a bit dorkier. I like that Sarah had her own happy ending, but they shouldn't have changed the plot. There is way too much going on. First off, Colt was and never will be, a good Johnny. Johnny has this... Vibe. The bad boy that takes care of Baby and changes for her heart. Colt didn't have any of that energy, and neither did Abigail. Baby is meant to be an innocent, dorky, next-door-neighbor kind of girl. Do you know what I mean? Abigail seemed awkward, didn't know how to act, or dance. I know, Baby didn't know how to dance in the beginning. But the new baby didn't know how to dance in the end either. I'll give Abigail some credit, the lift is NOT as easy as it looks. So, I can understand the struggle... As awkward as it was to watch. However, I don't know what went wrong with Colt. He has a physique that could potentially help dancing as Patrick did. Yet, it was.. Difficult to watch. I was hoping the end dance was good, but it failed. When I heard Mrs. Houseman say, "Did you know she could do that?" I was trying to figure out what she could do now, that she couldn't at the beginning. The original Dirty Dancing... Perfection. They shouldn't have brought it down so low. The best thing about the new Dirty Dancing, is that it shows how amazing the original is. I don't know if choosing Abigail was a great choice for this movie. I like her, but this type of dancing does require a certain body type (most of the time), just like most sports or dances. Baby's father seemed way too cold, even when he was being nice. He didn't seem like he had this special bond like in the original. Max and Neil were all wrong. Neil was too likable, Max's two-faced personality wasn't there. When all hope was lost, we relied on the ending. But, it didn't come through. BABY AND JOHNNY DON'T EVEN END UP TOGETHER. The ending took it away from our imaginations to believe they did! Happily ever after was thrown out the window. Baby gets married, has a kid, and meets Johnny again with it all right in front of his face. A total disappointment, and a waste of time. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/11/21 Full Review Audience Member Awful remake , bad choice of actors complete change of character & story line for Lisa Housman .baby dances like a dumpy hunchback and there's weird miming going on throughout one of the worst remakes I've ever seen Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Read all reviews
