Ben Kenigsberg New York Times By the time it is over, "Disco" has crossed the line that separates being productively ambiguous from being simply cryptic. Dec 1, 2020 Full Review Alexandra Heller-Nicholas AWFJ.org Disco is a riveting film about being denied support by those who feign to offer it but fail, and the opportunities available to a young woman whose options are limited and shrinking rapidly. Sep 21, 2019 Full Review Jordan Mintzer Hollywood Reporter Strange, surprising and increasingly unnerving... Sep 6, 2019 Full Review Alex Saveliev Film Threat Disco is about how toxicity seeps into everything from masculinity to religion to parenting and, yes, even dancing. It's as beautiful and heartbreaking as watching a dancer pirouette into an abyss. Rated: 8/10 Jan 4, 2021 Full Review Nathaniel Rogers The Film Experience Disco is far too repetitive and its point of view remains as opaque as Mirjam's psychology. It's not enough, always, to merely observe. Rated: C Dec 19, 2019 Full Review Anton Bitel Eye for Film the more allegorical the film becomes, the more the viewer is inclined to suspect that Syversen is targeting not just Christianity (in its different forms and factions), but any rigid belief system or community bubble. Fanny's L As usual with norwegian movies, it tries to tell a story without telling anything at all, with too many dead moments. There is no real aim or purpose to this movie, other than following the main character, Miriam, whom we are supposed to like even though the only thing we know about her is that she seems to be a very well-liked and succesful girl in a Free Church Cult ran by her family. Eventually we realise that her life kind of sucks, despite being so succesful on the surface, and that the ones who *should* offer her support fails to do so, and just blames *her* for her shortcomings. When the movie has gone on like this for a while and finally nears the end, she seeks out another cult and it's just more of the same empty promises made but lack of actual support. The end.
