Ben Kenigsberg New York Times By the time it is over, "Disco" has crossed the line that separates being productively ambiguous from being simply cryptic. Dec 1, 2020 Full Review Alexandra Heller-Nicholas AWFJ.org Disco is a riveting film about being denied support by those who feign to offer it but fail, and the opportunities available to a young woman whose options are limited and shrinking rapidly. Sep 21, 2019 Full Review Jordan Mintzer The Hollywood Reporter Strange, surprising and increasingly unnerving... Sep 6, 2019 Full Review Alex Saveliev Film Threat Disco is about how toxicity seeps into everything from masculinity to religion to parenting and, yes, even dancing. It's as beautiful and heartbreaking as watching a dancer pirouette into an abyss. Rated: 8/10 Jan 4, 2021 Full Review Nathaniel Rogers The Film Experience Disco is far too repetitive and its point of view remains as opaque as Mirjam's psychology. It's not enough, always, to merely observe. Rated: C Dec 19, 2019 Full Review Orla Smith Seventh Row Frida uses her physicality to show how uncomfortable Mirjam feels, shifting her limbs and holding herself awkwardly. You can tell she'd do anything to get away from here, but she doesn't know how or what 'away' even means. Oct 25, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews

Ola G Mirjam (Josefine Frida Pettersen), a champion 19-year-old dancer who becomes a youth leader in her step-father's evangelical church and falls into conflict when her dance performances don't align with the church's strict, fundamentalist teachings. As her confidence wanes and her elders criticize her faith, she is pushed into a more extreme congregation... "Disco" explores heavy themes such as cults, extremism, and the pressure placed on young people in all-consuming environments and from adults. The problem is that the film suffers from an incoherent narrative that creates a cut up film in which we see scenes stacked on each other one after one with no conclusion to any of them. As someone mentioned the story never follows up on any of these conflicts we are confronted with and the dramatic arch is nowhere to be seen. Josefine Frida Pettersen does her best, but due to the mentioned problems it's not enough. We who saw her in the famous Norwegian tv-show "SKAM" knows what a fantastic actress she is. In one of the reviews on IMDB, someone wrote "There is a very basic "law" in screenwriting called Chekhov's Gun, which states that: "If in the first act you have hung a pistol on the wall, then in the following one it should be fired." In other words: Every action need a reaction, and Jorunn Myklebust Syversen would greatly benefit from learning this simple lesson, so that her films would be more than just a string of loosely connected events." Which is pretty much spot on. I do not understand the raving reviews of "Disco". Trivia: The film won the award for best cinematography at the Gothenburg Film Festival and was nominated for three awards at the 2019 Kanon Prize and five awards at the 2020 Amanda Prize. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/03/25 Full Review Fanny's L As usual with norwegian movies, it tries to tell a story without telling anything at all, with too many dead moments. There is no real aim or purpose to this movie, other than following the main character, Miriam, whom we are supposed to like even though the only thing we know about her is that she seems to be a very well-liked and succesful girl in a Free Church Cult ran by her family. Eventually we realise that her life kind of sucks, despite being so succesful on the surface, and that the ones who *should* offer her support fails to do so, and just blames *her* for her shortcomings. When the movie has gone on like this for a while and finally nears the end, she seeks out another cult and it's just more of the same empty promises made but lack of actual support. The end.
