After injuring his back in a fall, Sir Lancelot Spratt (James Robertson Justice), the pompous medical director at a London hospital, falls in love with his physical therapist, Iris (Barbara Murray). Softened by this encounter, Spratt seeks romantic advice from Simon Sparrow (Dirk Bogarde), a suave young doctor who has also become enamored of a woman -- Delia (Samantha Eggar), a beautiful would-be actress.
