Critics Consensus

Doctor Sleep forsakes the elemental terror of its predecessor for a more contemplative sequel that balances poignant themes against spine-tingling chills.

Stephen Romei The Australian Flanagan pulls it off, especially in the extended climactic sequence. Rated: 4/5 Nov 18, 2019 Full Review Kim Newman Sight & Sound With Kubrick-like attention to detail, Flanagan plays with images and themes we remember, but always with different outcomes. Nov 13, 2019 Full Review K. Austin Collins Vanity Fair A body of work that benefits from hindsight and reflection - unexpected pleasures for a horror movie, which must be why they feel so welcome. Nov 12, 2019 Full Review Zofia Wijaszka Nerdspin Doctor Sleep is a worthy successor to The Shining, offering a blend of nostalgia and a thought-provoking tale of individuality, sobriety, grief, and generational friendship. Rated: A Aug 26, 2024 Full Review Calum Cooper Source (Scotland) Flanagan personally edited the film, and the way he blends the woes of reality with the horrors of illusionary visuals is as ominous as it is strangely addictive. Rated: 4/5 Jul 14, 2024 Full Review Mihir Fadnavis Firstpost Ewan McGregor delivers a solid performance and Rebecca Fergusson is superb in a role that develops like a photograph, even though it feels like a cookie-cutter villain at the onset... Bri I dare say it outshined the shining. I would watch it again and I dont watch movies twice. Its definitely worth the 2hrs and Stephen King even liked it. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/20 Full Review Audience Member I read the book and for me both the book and movie suffered from the same problem, the concept wasn't worthy of the original. The villians just didn't work for me, they seemed narrow and unimportant. The first movie tapped into the nightmare world people encounter when dealing with alcoholism (either personally or in the family). But Dr. Sleep? It just seemed like the villain didn't represent anything. They were just kind of bad people. The acting was really good in this movie. But the finale was too nostalgic. It felt like it was basking in the glory of the original and that vibe completely clashed with any feeling of horror or terror. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Travis T Would’ve been 5 if Jack had played the father Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/01/20 Full Review Patrick O Really enjoyed movie, good adaption of book. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/22/19 Full Review C.Q. McWilliams It was ok, but a little long...Never a big Stephen King fan... Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/19/19 Full Review Diana O It was okay loosely connected to Shinning. This definitely is a rental. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/18/19 Full Review Read all reviews
