      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Dolly Parton's Christmas on the Square isn't quite up to its star's standards, but its overwhelming good cheer and campy self-awareness may be just what viewers are looking for.

Schuyler G It doesn't have to be good to become a family Christmas classic! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/12/24 Full Review P K AMAZING FILM!!!! Campy but so sweet and funny. A new favorite Xmas classic Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/06/23 Full Review Generic S The best part of the movie is Dolly Parton (which is expected whenever she's in a movie). The bits without her range from bad to good and hover mostly on the meh side. Vocals and choreography are pretty great. Lyrics range from meh to good, with the Dolly numbers being up to her usual quality. I wanted to turn the movie off in the beginning, but it did pick up enough to be in enjoyable after about the 25ish minute mark. I'm glad I sat through it. Plot is a pretty run of the mill Christmas movie with a fun enough twist made better by Dolly's performance. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/11/22 Full Review Wyndi G LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/23/22 Full Review Audience Member Turned off after 5mins. Absolutely awful. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member I turned into this movie thinking the music would be inspiring and beautiful. The writing was horrible but the music was just as bad. I'm totally blown away that someone that does music so well could get it so wrong. I had to stop watching half way through. It was just unbearable. Clarisse Loughrey Independent (UK) It's hard to figure out quite where Christmas on the Square is headed in any given moment, despite the film borrowing liberally from festive classics. Rated: 2/5 Dec 5, 2020 Full Review Wesley Morris New York Times "Campy" is camp with a diploma and a martini. And "Christmas on the Square" is a drunk. Nov 23, 2020 Full Review Amy Nicholson FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) This is Netflix's version of community theater, which I don't really mind! Nov 21, 2020 Full Review Michael Cuby them. With new original music from Dolly herself and more than enough snappy dance numbers, Christmas On the Square won’t be winning any awards but it will surely become a holiday favorite in its own right. Sep 26, 2022 Full Review Jason Shawhan Nashville Scene It's a perfect fusion of Dolly's aesthetics with the vibe of Tyler Perry's stage productions - even if, as a friend on the internet said, "You're going to want to wallow in sin afterward, it's so sweet." Sep 9, 2021 Full Review Leonie Cooper NME (New Musical Express) A complex film this is not, but rather a film about faith, more specifically, Christianity, the driving force for so much of Dolly Parton's own charitable work.
