Jakeem B Awesome heart warming movie ❤️ Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/09/23 Full Review christian o This movie isn't good. So many other films have done this better. Cliche and boring. Even Scott Thompson was lame. Not sure why this got so many good reviews. Maybe the only critics that saw it were friends of the director. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Hysterical and brutally honest at times Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Enjoyed this movie - so fun on a Saturday afternoon. Most of us had our awkward stage and can relate to the main character. We too may have wanted to be brave but remained shy and quiet. The most fun was the 80s references I could relate to from Geena Davis to Milli Vanilli (the tape I wore out in high school/college). Yes, the movie was predictable but also so sweet. I also loved the focus on the aging community and the need for multi-generational respect & understanding. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member "Irene" was promising from the start; funny moments, quirky characters. I wish I knew what happened, but somewhere around the half hour mark, the swearing and sex references started and grew increasingly worse until I almost turned it off. The F word was prominent throughout followed by the phrase "SMD" (abbreviated), which was uttered by nearly everyone in the movie-even the residents of the senior living facility. Had this movie not had all of the swearing and disgusting sex talk (references, etc), it could have been great; inspiring even. Irene for the most part is a likeable character who worships Geena Davis (who narrates the movie, talks to Irene and-and appears briefly in the film toward the end) , but even she joined the "sex talk/swearing" crowd eventually. The thing I hated about this movie is that all of this swearing and sex talk was completely unnecessary. The basic storyline is about a girl who is ridiculed for her weight and her looks but doesn't let it stop her from her dreams. Even Geena Davis mentions in the movie that she'd made a movie called "Earth Girls Are Easy'" and that it didn't ruin her. Kind of an ironic statement given that she chose to do a movie like this. There was no nudity, but seriously, what kind of high school would send kids who were suspended to a senior living facility where the resident are just as bad with the sex talk and swearing as the students? The music was great and I loved that Geena Davis was the main focus of Irene's quest to follow her dream. I loved that this movie takes place in Canada but the swearing.... Yes, I know I keep going back to that, but it completely ruined what could have been an amazing movie. The previews make it look great, but I ended up fast-forwarding the movie until I got to Gena Davis' scene and then again toward the end. Watching this movie makes me want a remake and I really hope someone will do it, sans swearing and sex talk, but if that happened, I would guess that the movie would be about fifteen minutes long. Just a terrible, terrible movie with a great message. That is a tragedy because so many young girls could benefit from watching this, but I wouldn't wish this movie on anyone. Katie Walsh Los Angeles Times Writer-director Pat Mills balances the sugary sentimentality of the story with the right amount of sour in his smart and snappy dialogue. Mar 13, 2018 Full Review Nick Schager Variety Even when the film's eccentricities feel too choreographed, it manages to deliver its preordained uplift with good-humored charm. Feb 27, 2018 Full Review John Semley Globe and Mail Watching Mills' film, one wishes it were as weird and wonderful as Irene herself. It's almost as if the writer/director doesn't realize how rare his own creation is. Rated: 2.5/4 Sep 29, 2017 Full Review Chris Knight National Post An above-average entry in the loveable-misfits comic sub-genre, Don't Talk to Irene is the kind of low-budget gem that can get lost in the glare of the Toronto International Film Festival. Sep 30, 2017 Full Review Robert Koehler Cinema Scope After the dark pleasures of his debut feature Guidance, writer-director Pat Mills wanders into the deep Toronto suburban bush with his considerably less funny follow-up Don't Talk to Irene. Sep 29, 2017 Full Review Norman Wilner NOW Toronto It's a small picture with modest ambitions, but that doesn't have to be a bad thing. Rated: 3/5 Sep 11, 2017 Full Review Read all reviews
