Critics Consensus

Dorian Blues has a familiar outline, but it's filled in with enough sharp writing and solid performances to forgive the sense of déjà vu.

Ann Hornaday Washington Post [Writer-director] Bardwell offers a cheerful, if sometimes strenuously earnest, take on a subject that seems overdue for a lighthearted touch. Jan 12, 2006 Full Review Marjorie Baumgarten Austin Chronicle Dorian Blues has wit, humor, good performances, and clever technique that catapults the film into the front ranks of coming-out movies. Rated: 2.5/5 Dec 6, 2005 Full Review Lisa Kennedy Denver Post Dorian Blues makes me yearn for the day that audiences have become so comfortable enough with this subgenre that a clever director can make a spoof in which many if not all of the conventions get lampooned. Rated: 2/4 Dec 2, 2005 Full Review Doug Brantley Out Magazine Llike his main character, writer-director Bardwell seems more concerned with maintaining the stereotypical status quo than making his own personal statement. May 27, 2022 Full Review Anderson Jones The Advocate Queer cinema needs another coming-out story like the world needs another TV series starring Tyra Banks. Yet young filmmakers stay under the delusion that their story is very different from yours and mine. Apr 26, 2022 Full Review Eric D. Snider EricDSnider.com It's a sweet and likable movie, if not an expert one, and a respectable entry in the genre. Rated: B Apr 10, 2006 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Good coming of age movie, dealing with some tough situations and events. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/04/18 Full Review Audience Member This was a really good movie. It managed to bring a fresh note in a genre that is always recycling itself.Great performances from the actors that played the two brothers.Actually the entire movie was special because of the brother dynamics.McMillian managed to deliver the protagonist's struggles amazingly. The final scene did it for me,although I have to admit most of the film was to the point. When you live for the others, you forget to live for yourself. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Low-budget with decent acting and a pleasant script. It's nice that a light hand was applied to a film that could have been overwrought. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member Sometimes a movie rises to the top of my Netflix queue and I wonder how it got thre in the first place I was expecting to hate it as I do most American gay film, but it was actually pretty good. It does overdo all subplot events a bit, and it does come across as a after school special at times, but it was short and sweet. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member I think this was one of those movies recommended by IMDB when you watch a particular other movie. In this case I'm glad, because it's very good. It doesn't hurt that the lead, Michael McMillian, is cute, but he's a good and funny actor too. Most of the actors did a great job and for once, the script of a gay-themed movie didn't suck (pardon the pun). It mixed coming out with coming of age and did a great job. The overall tone wasn't camp or corny, it had some funny moments and some dramatic ones. I especially liked the relationship of the two brothers. Recommended!!! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Surprising funny and insightful for a low budget indie film. Overcomes a familiar storyline with sharp writing, great comic timing and flashes of real emotional heft. Michael McMillan is excellent in the lead. Will appeal to gay and straight viewers alike.
