gem 1 This is a very good court room drama based on a true story. Although it happened over 60 years ago it is a case that is still shrouded in mystery since the victim, Mary Pinchot Meyer, was a lover and confident of John F Kennedy. In 1964 Washington D.C. a black man is conveniently accused of murdering Mrs Meyer while she was out jogging in the park. Dovey Roundtree, one of the very few black Women Attorneys of the time takes the case when she realizes that the accused Raymond Crump is innocent and being framed. Most of the movie takes place in the court room and moves along swiftly. All the acting is very good, but the actress playing Dovey Roundtree, Joy White, seems to have channeled this remarkable women and Dovey's closing statement at the trial is very powerful. This movie is definitely worth watching and it held my interest until the very end. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/23/25 Full Review Dee M "Dovey's Promise" is one of the best courtroom dramas ever put to film and deserves every award and acknowledgment is has rightfully earned. It is quite clear that that CIA murdered Mary Pinchot Meyer as they did JFK.This is why this film is so important! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/23/25 Full Review Wendell K Dovey's Promise is an excellent courtroom drama, and I am appalled by those 1 star reviews. One trashed the film just for whom it is about: Mary Pinchot Meyer and Raymond Crump. And the other claimed that a jr. high student with a cell phone could have shot a better film, and you only have to watch the trailer to see that that isn't true. This is a low-budget indie film, and it doesn't have the production values of A Few Good Men. But, the latter had a budget of $40 million And that was in 1991 dollars, which is equivalent to nearly $100 million today. Dovey's Promise involves mostly the prosecutor calling up his witnesses, followed by Dovey Rountree largely flipping them into her witnesses. And the few times she couldn't do that, it got fiery and dramatic because Dovey was a warrior. And the actress who played her, Joy White, was excellent because she exhibited the energy, the eloquence, and the strong mental acuity that Dovey had. I say that, despite its low budget, Dovey's Promise is honed well as it reenacts a real trial of great historical importance. It is very grabbing; it is very watchable; and it is very well done. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/23/25 Full Review Mike J I was hoping for the best in this film but it was such a let down ! Acting was so bad and production value was so cheaply done. My son is in junior high and he can do better with his android phone ? Waste of money do not watch this movie ! Rated 1 out of 5 stars 04/16/25 Full Review Wolfgang S It’s kind of disgusting to have to glorify a couple of immoral people - an adulterous druggie lady ; and a criminal with a long rap sheet of thefts, rapes, and arsons committed both before and after the incident in the movie. But, of course, political correctness comes before truth. It scores brownie points. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/21/25 Full Review Kiera S I decided to watch this as a lover of both history and courtroom dramas. I didn't know much about Dovey Roundtree going into this film, so I can't speak to its accuracy. But it did make me want to learn more about her and specifically this case. The production value isn't real high on this film, but if you have watched other small independent films it shouldn't bother you much. Partway through the courtroom battle I found myself fully invested. There is some iteresting back-and-forth between the opposing sides, and quality acting kept me dialed in. There is a lot to digest here, especially if you start doing some research afterwards about some of the hints that get dropped (like possible C.I.A. involvement). This is definitely "worth a watch," and nice to see a film standing on good quality story and strong acting. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/15/25 Full Review Read all reviews
