David Mermelstein Wall Street Journal What appears to be just a charming comic romance is in fact a sober indictment of life in shah-era Tehran. And the film's conclusion is shattering. Oct 1, 2020 Full Review Olivia Popp Asian Movie Pulse Shooting in black and white, Beyzaie strips away all that is unnecessary for this story, leaving just two people in love and the tragic inevitabilities of life. May 21, 2023 Full Review Michael J. Casey Michael J. Cinema The story is a little on the slow side, but the imagery is second to none. A fever dream of images, some neo-realist, others surrealist, crafted in gorgeous black and white by cinematographer Barbod Taheri and Maziar Partow. Audience Member Downpour, though conventionally enjoyable, is not to be dismissed as frivolous. Beyzaie tells the story not as a romance but as a socially conscious melancholy comedy of sorts. Between the gaping seams, one can see the confidence that the filmmaker has imbued in every aspect of this, his first film. Leading man Fannizadeh is owed much in its success, as he renders his lonely underdog educator as fully sympathetic every step of the way. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Read all reviews
