J. R. Jones Chicago Reader Director King Hu makes kinetic use of the widescreen frame: the action is dominated by gonzo knife throwing, and arrow fire has seldom felt so lethal. Jun 18, 2019 Full Review Robert Abele Los Angeles Times Hu directs his fight sequences with a showman's flair but also a pickpocket's sleight of hand. He puts you inside the action. Jun 18, 2019 Full Review Scott Marks San Diego Reader King Hu's masterwork is guaranteed to out-Marvel any of the major blockbusters on this summer's release schedule. Rated: 5/5 May 19, 2016 Full Review Howard Waldstein CBR A masterpiece of composition, choreography, and a lesson in minimalist storytelling. Jul 18, 2023 Full Review Hannah Kinney-Kobre Pittsburgh City Paper For a genre so concerned with the distant past, wuxia’s popularity in China is not premised strictly on nostalgia. May 9, 2022 Full Review Cole Smithey ColeSmithey.com This is an exquisite martial arts movie you will not soon forget. Rated: FIVE STARS Apr 22, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

John A The combat/action scenes (which make up at least 50% of this film) vary from convincing to semi-cartoonish and too fantastical given what gets established in the first act. A lesser still fun wuxia. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/31/23 Full Review Dick C All my credits go to King HU, who starts a total different style of "Traditional Action" film in that time... Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/09/23 Full Review Audience Member This is fine, but it lacks the tension and cinematic techniques that King Hu used to elevate wuxia into high art in films like A Touch of Zen. There was possibly too much fighting in this one. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member 7.6/10, my review: https://lasttimeisawdotcom.wordpress.com/2017/04/26/last-film-i-watched-dragon-inn-1967/ Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Audience Member My modern-day sensibilities cannot get over the cheesy OTT acting, and I've probably been spoilt by amazing fight choreography such that those here feel a little dull. BUT... I must admit that the camerawork is nimble and often surprising, and the sharp editing makes the in-camera effects and stunts work exceedingly well. It's also fascinating how this seems to be influenced by Westerns of the 1950s, while in its turn inspiring some of Quentin Tarantino's best (including Westerns). Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member That old school trampoline-fu. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Read all reviews
