Unfortunately, while the animation remains its biggest selling point, the result is clunky, tepid, and, frankly, boring because of its lusterless dialogue. Go to Full Review

Appreciated from a distance as an art-object it's kind of a fascinatingly weird, beautiful oddity - especially when they're done with the plot stuff and can just hit the 'montage' or 'battle scene' button (which is... often) Go to Full Review

This is a film that's carried by its visuals and music, but the writing never manages to tell a complete and satisfying story. Go to Full Review

An indistinct fantasy saga that might be just fine for a video game in 1992, but makes for a lousy movie in 2020. Go to Full Review

Aluna U Sep 30 Dragon Quest: Your Story brings a beloved game to life with stunning visuals and emotional storytelling, though it deviates sharply in its final act. While the animation is clean and colorful, it lacks a distinct Japanese anime feel. The story builds steadily with a strong foundation, though pacing issues and abrupt transitions hinder immersion. The twist ending—revealing the world as a simulation—feels jarring and controversial, especially for fans of the original game. Still, the film delivers a heartfelt message on nostalgia and the meaning games hold in our lives. The while movie is kind of boring and the characters are uncanny. French dub sucks and the end, despite being a love letter to video games, is incredibly naive and pulls you away from the movie. See more Jay W 11/21/2024 Other than Mario and Zelda, the highest selling video game franchise on the original NES was "Dragon Quest", (or "Dragon Warrior" in the States). Prior to watching this film I played through and beat the original 4 NES games. The endeavor took over 50 hours of gameplay. I stopped short on playing Dragon Quest 5, which is what this movie is based on, but suffice it to say that I am familiar with the Dragon Quest world but did not know what direction this film would go. Upon finishing the film, I can say with no hesitation, this is the best video game to movie adaptation. Appropriately, this is also the most faithful video game video game adaptation. All it is missing is the 10+ hours of grinding to level up your character. This movie is a ton of fun. It does what few films today can do, it is entertaining for both children and adults without doing any pop culture or adult jokes. The film just taps into the heart of a child, and the inner child in us all. It is fun for kids, while at the same time still having a frightening edge. It is paced well, always keeping something interesting going on. As much as I would have loved for the film to be fully animated in Toriyama's traditional 2D anime style, the 3D has its charm and is faithful to the more modern video games. I will use that same excuse when it comes to the poor English dub lip sync; it is accurate to the video game. The movie has a real good feeling of fun and adventure. The movie has the ability to take the old and familiar and making it feel new and creative. There are certain story beats that we have seen a dozen times already but show it with a new twist. That could be due to how novel some of the other story beats are for an animated kids' movie. I won't give away what those twists are, but they make this film stand out. For that reason, this film is memorable and very rewatchable. If you've never heard of "Dragon Quest" I recommend this film. If you are a big fan of the franchise, this is a must see. If you are just a fan of quality animated films, then you'll like this film. And that is MY story. See more Jeremy S 06/20/2024 The game had too much story to make into a decent movie. It would have made a better anime. Too many things got cut out or glossed over. See more S4l3m s 11/03/2023 Si me gustó xD perdón v': See more Read all reviews
