Richard Nash. Directed by Gilbert Cates. Production Designer: Peter Donahos With Beau Bridges and Susan Sarandon. A man released from an insane asylum romances an enigmatic woman who helps him unravel his tragic past. Bridges plays Jesse, a young man recently released from a mental hospital for murdering his mother by setting his house on fire while a teenager. In Connecticut, he meets Chloe (Sarandon) who befriends him. Together they form an uneasy alliance which grows into something larger. Jesse is convinced he has been insane, and entertains doubts that he is cured. Yet he has no clear recollection of his crime. Chloe is wary at first, but she conceals it well. As she comes to know Jesse she becomes confidant in his sanity. But why did he murder his mother? Chloe suspects there may be more to the story. Together, they embark upon a grim investigation into the circumstances that Jesse can't remember. In the process they discover a twisted and appalling truth. One Summer Love could easily be a horrifying movie. It is actually a very unusual romantic mystery. While the lead characters' mutual experience is unconventional and eerie, the film is thoughtful and touching. I am no fan of romances, but the romance was only part of this engrossing film. One Summer Love is darkly pensive and imaginative. Filmed on location in Danbury. Released on VHS.
