Steve D A waste of everyone's time. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/27/24 Full Review Audience Member This is the finest adaptation of the *medea* known to me. It explores the inner emotions of an actress playing Medea through her interaction with an American 'Medea of Glyfada' who has killed her three children in order, like Medea, to gain vengeance in 'pain for pain' upon a husband who has taken a Greek woman as a lover. The American woman, Brenda Collins, is socially isolated, likemedea, and has religious beliefs that are also darker and at odds with those of the society around her. As Maya's (Melina Mercouri) undertsanding of the motivations and awful twists of fate of Brenda Collins become clear, she changes her approach to playing Medea. In the end we get at least 3 different 'interpretations'. For 1978, discussion of sexual passion, murderous impulses, hatreds, lies is extremely frank. The final scene of the night that Brenda kills her children is deeply horrific but without a drop of blood spilled, and like Hitchcock's *psycho* no knife touched or cuts human flesh in the scene, though we see blood running down a drain. I use this film whenever I teach the Medea. It is a masterpiece with stunning acting jobs by two academy-award-winning actors, Ellen Burstyn and Melina Mercouri. Not out on dvd to my knowledge. But some vhs's available and they an be transferred. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Read all reviews
