Synopsis
This documentary explores the central role of voodoo in Haitian culture. Brought to the Caribbean nation by West African slaves, the religion played a formidable role in igniting the explosive revolution that, in 1804, made Haiti the first black republic. In the face of entrenched poverty and political unrest, voodoo continues to provide Haiti's people with a way to understand the chaos around them -- particularly through the religion's hypnotic music.
