Critics Consensus

Despite the charming principal performances, The Dukes remains little more than an unambitious pet project.

Moira MacDonald Seattle Times Davi, who has the kind of handsomely weathered face that has spent a lot of time gazing into the sun, clearly poured his heart into this movie, and it shows. Rated: 3/4 Dec 11, 2008 Full Review Josh Rosenblatt Austin Chronicle As light as a feather and about as memorable, The Dukes is a pet project all the way, just a lark for Davi and his buddies to star in and screen for one another like a home movie. Rated: 2.5/5 Nov 26, 2008 Full Review Rafer Guzman Newsday The sweetness grows cloying by the end, but perhaps that's fitting for a film that's so clearly a labor of love. Rated: 2/4 Nov 21, 2008 Full Review Josh Bell Las Vegas Weekly A meager, low-key dramedy. Rated: 2/5 Nov 26, 2008 Full Review Bob Strauss Los Angeles Daily News A lot of love was clearly poured into this project; too bad the results were only so-so. Rated: 2/4 Nov 21, 2008 Full Review James Berardinelli ReelViews The Dukes may be hard to find on the big screen, but it's worth keeping an eye out for once it reaches DVD. Audience Member Movie is about a doo-wop act that at one time had the most popular song in the country. Decades later, the group desperate for cash, the musicians decide to work together to pull off an ill-conceived heist. Average movie at best. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Great film. Congrads on Robert Davi on making a really good film. The film is better than half of the films that are playing right now. Davi did a great job both directing wise and acting wise. He has a great on screen chemistry with Chazz Palminteri, who is also hilarious in the film. The film kind of reminded me of the movie, The Crew, with Richard Dreyfuss and Burt Reynolds. The Crew was a better film than this. However, I still liked The Dukes and recommend it. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie is much much better than what the rt score shows. The movie starts a little slow but once the story unfolds it is quite entertaining and the characters were great. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member A funny character driven story that followed a bunch of wiseguys trying to regain the success they once enjoyed as yutes. I really enjoyed the cast, which made up for what lacked in some of the writing. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Struggles to rise above the surface. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member As soon as it started, I immediately didn't like it. I think I got to about 37 minutes before I turned it off.
