      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Dumb and Dumber To does have its moments, but not enough of them -- and the Farrelly brothers' brand of humor is nowhere near as refreshingly transgressive as it once seemed.

Test T I watched this on DVD recently. It's not anywhere near as good as the first movie, but it's still quite funny in places. I thought the first half of the movie was much better than the second, and I thought the ending was poor. The chemistry between Lloyd & Harry is still there, but the story lets this movie down badly, especially at the end when I found it over complicated, confusing and laboured. I'm still glad I watched it, but without the first movie, this one would probably have never been made. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/28/24 Full Review Scott S Nowhere near as good as the original, but I still enjoyed it. The movie delivers some solid laughs but I think it's about 15 minutes too long as the final act drags a little. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/03/24 Full Review Keith N This is probably one of the definitions of a horrible sequel and doing a sequel years too late. This should've been done when both were younger, not older. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/28/23 Full Review Elliott T Terrible!!!! They tried way too hard in this to be exactly as the first movie which is a classic. This will have you 20 min in questioning whether or not to turn it off. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/19/23 Full Review Saneel N In the world of sequels that nobody asked for, "Dumb and Dumber To" sits high on the list. A 20-year-later follow-up to the original film, it's an overly ambitious attempt to recapture the magic that just ends up feeling forced and, frankly, a bit sad. The film brings back Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels as Lloyd and Harry, the iconic duo whose brain cell count is as low as ever. However, the charm and novelty of these characters have worn off with time. Their antics, which were once endearing in a goofy sort of way, now feel stale and repetitive. The plot is as thin as a piece of paper, clearly an afterthought to the endless parade of cheap slapstick gags and toilet humor. It's a desperate attempt to replicate the original's formula, but it lacks the heart and cleverness that made the first film a hit. Moreover, the humor, or what passes for it, in "Dumb and Dumber To" feels outdated. The jokes that might have been funny two decades ago now come across as offensive and tone-deaf. It's a clear indication that the filmmakers were more interested in cashing in on nostalgia than creating a worthwhile sequel. The performances are also a letdown. Carrey and Daniels try their best, but they're let down by a script that feels like it was written in a rush. Their chemistry, which was one of the highlights of the original film, is barely there. In conclusion, "Dumb and Dumber To" is a disappointing sequel that fails to live up to its predecessor. It's a textbook example of why some things are better left in the past. If you're a fan of the original, do yourself a favor and skip this one. It's not worth the time or the brain cells you'll inevitably lose. Jake Wilson Sydney Morning Herald The gags run the gamut from the inspired to the amusingly corny -- and are hung on one of the Farrellys' patented convoluted plots. Rated: 2/5 Jan 16, 2015 Full Review Mark Kermode Observer (UK) The Farrellys, who once had a genuinely anarchic edge, demonstrate a fatal lack of timing - missing the film's comic beat by around 20 years. Rated: 1/5 Dec 21, 2014 Full Review Geoffrey Macnab Independent (UK) The occasional uproarious moment is small reward for the long scenes we're forced to endure of Carrey and Daniels gurning and grinning as if they are fresh out of bedlam. Rated: 2/5 Dec 19, 2014 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies Yet another Hollywood sequel that didn’t really need to happen.
