What to Know

Critics Consensus

Dune occasionally struggles with its unwieldy source material, but those issues are largely overshadowed by the scope and ambition of this visually thrilling adaptation.

Audience Says

Denis Villeneuve's Dune looks and sounds amazing -- and once the (admittedly slow-building) story gets you hooked, you'll be on the edge of your seat for the sequel.

Christina Newland iNews.co.uk Denis Villeneuve’s windswept epic is engrossing enough to maintain an audience with an intermission and a running time twice its length. Rated: 3/5 Mar 10, 2022 Full Review Wenlei Ma News.com.au When the anticipation is feverish, it sets up movies to disappoint and fail. This long-awaited movie smashes those expectations. Rated: 4.5/5 Dec 21, 2021 Full Review Paul Byrnes Sydney Morning Herald Dune is a triumph of mediocrity. What it does, it does well enough, but was it worth doing? It's a cookie-cutter movie, a restatement of every trope that now impoverishes cinema. Rated: 3/5 Dec 6, 2021 Full Review Yasmine Kandil Discussing Film With a tone and narrative that feels like a melting pot of some of the most beloved franchises in popular culture, it is not far-fetched to think that Dune could become the next big thing. Rated: 4/5 Jul 15, 2024 Full Review Paul Emmanuel Enicola The Movie Buff The “Dune” series has long been considered a landmark of science fiction. Fortunately, Denis Villeneuve’s astute direction in laying the right foundations only shows his respect for Frank Herbert’s work. Rated: A- Jul 4, 2024 Full Review Rebecca Long Sierra Magazine While Villeneuve's version makes more of an effort than Lynch's to explore some of Dune's meatier themes, like colonization, it fails to nail the environmental ideas. Andrew I prefer part 1 over part 2 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/14/24 Full Review jonathan k The writing , the acting, the special effects are amazing, it's a good movie since I am a Fan of the Dune Franchise. Still think the 1984 version is the best though, this one is good too. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/17/24 Full Review Blake L A good sci-fi movie, just not a good Dune adaptation movie. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/11/24 Full Review Lisa J I think they put way to much money and time in that movie for it to turn out like it did. I was very very disappointed with Part 1 and now disappointed with Pt 2, esp the fact that it seems ti imply a PT 3- I hope not. The 1984 version was so much better, and the actors did a far better job with alot less money. I stretched to give it a 3..... Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/22/24 Full Review John M An incredible work from Denis Villeneuve that showcases his technical filmmaking mastery very well. The sound is full, the score is evocative, the visual palette is unique to Arrakis, rather than replicating Tatooine. This entire film is pure set-up, which could alienate some fans with regards to story and plot. I appreciated the set-up, knowing there will be a Part 2 that will fully realize this story's potential. The "unfinished" nature did slightly take away from the overall quality of the film, but there is enough there to keep most viewers highly engaged (especially for science fiction fans). I would imagine fans of the book are on board with this adaptation, overall. Part 2 is my NUMBER 1 anticipated film of the year for 2024. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/19/24 Full Review Aaron C It's even greater in IMAX!! I saw it in theaters the first round but after getting another chance to see it again in IMAX is a glorious opportunity not to be missed!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/13/24 Full Review Read all reviews
