In the Kingdom of Izmer, wizards use their magic to rule the land. The young Empress Savina (Thora Birch) desires to use magic for good, but the evil Profion (Jeremy Irons) plans to utilize his powers to usurp the throne from Savina and subject the kingdom to totalitarian rule. Profion gains control of the kingdom's golden dragons, while Savina sets out to win control of the even more powerful red dragons, gaining the alliance of a motley group of individuals along the way.

I cannot defend this movie; it is, I would say, objectively bad. But nostalgia outweighs my better judgment here. Having been a fresh-faced 14 years old when it came out, I was thoroughly entertained by it then and because if that, I still watch it to this day.

Unfortunately this was not a good movie. Fans were dying for a DnD movie. Seems like they didn't have anyone to help with the script or filming that ever played or even enjoyed the games. I can't recommend it, the 3rd one in 2012 isn't bad if you just want a fantasy story, the new DnD movie in 2023, is great though, look for it instead.

Clearly a product of its time. Put too much emphasis on by now totally outdated effects, but captures some elements of a typical D&D session pretty neatly. Has the typical rag tag role player group and an over the top story. Not everything makes sense and some characters are pretty ridiculous. Makes for a fun evening that is totally forgettable at least did back in the day, nowadays one needs to be able to overlook the bad/old effects in addition to the bad dudes shiny lips.
