Mike M One of the most purely exuberant silent shorts this pair ever made, forsaking the usual if-it-can-go-wrong-it-will-go-wrong worldview for a scenario in which everything works out just about all right... Its genius is to cut out any clutter (Buster is as extraneous as it gets, and he's a top dog) to focus exclusively on the joshing dynamic between the two boy-men: the narrative business - in this instance - is the fallout that results when Ollie returns home from a night on the tiles and playfully, like a big kid, refuses to go to bed. One slightly sour note, as Ollie describes "the most beautiful woman in the world" he met while carousing - what's with the first word on the title card that reads "But she's Chinese"? Otherwise, it achieves superb harmony, both carefully and rather beautifully acted, by Stan in particular: look at the pride on his face as he tests the icing on the cake he's made for his master (yes, somebody will later end up covered in it), or the precision in his movements in the scene where, trying to get himself the sack, he sets about deliberately destroying the parlour - and Ollie just sits there, laughing.
