Critics Consensus

Riley Keough and Alicia Vikander give it their all, but Earthquake Bird suffers from a frustrating inability to bring its literary source material consistently to life.

Tara Brady Irish Times A mousy Alicia Vikander casts a convincing spell...and Westmoreland finds plenty of additional intrigue in this late 1980s Japanese setting... Rated: 3/5 Dec 2, 2019 Full Review Roxana Hadadi Pajiba Earthquake Bird is somewhat laborious in making its points, but it's a film whose unsettling qualities will grow on you with time. Nov 25, 2019 Full Review Karen Han Polygon The number of themes present in the film might work in literary form, but as a film, Earthquake Bird feels rushed and incomplete. Nov 18, 2019 Full Review Taylor Baker Drink in the Movies Episode 53: Honey Boy / Earthquake Bird / Ford v Ferrari Rated: 40/100 Dec 1, 2021 Full Review Katie Hogan She Likes Movies It's difficult to connect with any of the characters and feel any sympathy for them. Jan 29, 2020 Full Review Luke Whiston TheShiznit.co.uk Earthquake Bird is definitely a cut above Netflix's usual fare. On a surface level the film doesn't have that weird plastic sheen Netflix releases always seem to be cheapened by. Rated: B+ Jan 8, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews

Helen S What’s not to love about this movie. Alicia and Riley give stunning performances and the backdrop of Tokyo makes this film visually beautiful whilst the story captivates and draws you in. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/04/24 Full Review K R This movie was so bad and uninteresting I cannot believe it was made. The story was dull and unexciting, there was also very little build up for a film that is considered a thriller. But the acting was very good, especially from Alicia Vikander whose acting is always phenomenal. Also, the cinematography was very good; those are the only positives in this film. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review ty r Felt new and different. Definity worth a watch. Just fell a little short of great. Needed a little more development. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review steve d The story is kind of all over the place, but the acting is really strong. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Vikander has been running from death...and now in Japan, she's caught between bad fortune and the fate of a new lover she can't seem to shake. Interesting elements blended well by Scott. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Read all reviews
