Bruce McCabe Boston Globe Paul Bartel's Eating Raoul is about lurid sex, murder, cannibalism and greed. It's also the best comedy of the fall season. Apr 27, 2018 Full Review Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times Problem is, it's so laid-back it eventually gets monotonous. If the style and pacing had been as outrageous as the subject matter, we might have had something really amazing here. In an obsessively consumptive culture like America's, the only way for a common couple to strive is through killing, then consuming. lyalya . Eating Raoul was a bit of a fun surprise. I enjoyed the film, and feel it had a lot of character, and the characters themselves were weirdly likable, even while doing terrible things. The humor is so dry and dark, but that’s what made it work for me. It has this bit of quiet absurdity that sneaks up on you. I also really appreciated the camera work, some of the angles and shots were very clever and added to the overall vibe. It’s a strange film that doesn’t take itself too seriously, and that’s part of the charm I feel. If you like offbeat comedies with a twisted sense of humor and some satirical bite, this one’s worth checking out. It’s weird, witty, and way more entertaining than I had expected. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/20/25 Full Review Anahit C Eating Paul definitely kept me on my toes when watching it. It was a bit dark and offbeat, while somehow kept me wanting to watch more. With Paul and Marys acting it made the scenes that felt to ridiculous to be real seem real. The depth of their acting added a sense of strange humor.Even though the movie is very bold and outrageous most of the time the story line unfolds slowly and casually. Even though I wouldn't watch the movie again I couldn't seem to turn off the movie. The plot kept wondering what would happen next and I was even curious enough to watch the whole movie without searching up what happens next. The film was unique, twisted and a rare movie that we don't come across as much now. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 05/20/25 Full Review Haley R I honesty really enjoyed watching this movie. The plot and storyline was so interesting and unique unlike any film I’ve ever watched. It is funny, intense, scary and bizarre all in one. I really liked the dynamic of the two main characters and how they stick together through the roughest of times. The drastic change from how they started to how the end up is very entertaining. The build up of murders I’d also very interesting to watch. I found myself rooting for these characters to get their money and fund their new restaurant. The movie shows them struggling financially in the beginning while both working full time jobs, so of course the audience wants them to succeed. I would definitely watch this movie again and recommend it to anyone. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/19/25 Full Review Aldo T The movie Eating Raoul is a mix between a comedy and a murder movie, kind of like the franchise Scream. The movie is funny while dark and even a hint of satire. It was released in 1982 and showcases Sex, murder and yes even cannibalism as the name of the movie suggests. While this movie may not be a blockbuster it is definitely worth checking out. The beginning of the movie starts with introducing Paul and Mary who are a normal couple. While they seek some excitement they accidentally kill a swinger in the process. The couple ends up killing and even eating a man who threatened them. While the couple started as normal they ended up changing their lives by murder and cannibalism. This move is not necessarily the best but rather a time filler. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/15/25 Full Review Joshua H Eating Raoul (1982), directed by Paul Bartel, is an interesting dark comedy that has some clever moments but didn't fully impress me. The film is about a prudish couple, the Blands, who decide to kill wealthy swingers to fund their dream of opening a restaurant. The concept is pretty unique, and it has an offbeat appeal with its dry humor and exaggerated characters. Paul Bartel and Mary Woronov have a funny, awkward chemistry that suits the film’s weird tone, and there are moments that definitely made me laugh. However, a lot of the humor felt outdated, and the pacing was uneven. Some scenes dragged on too long, and the plot became a bit repetitive as it went on. I understand the film is meant to be satirical, but I didn’t find it as consistently engaging or funny as I had hoped. It has its cult appeal and some sharp social commentary, but for me, it’s just an okay watch. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 05/13/25 Full Review Elizabeth M While watching Eating Raoul I had a complete mix of emotions. I felt confused at times, surprised, bored, and curious as to what would happen next. I did find the plot to be intriguing and not something we see as often in today's films. I did find there to be some comedic lines which I enjoyed. The actors also did a fine job through out the film. This film was not my absolute favorite nor my go to genre however I did not feel that I was dreading to get through the film the way I honestly have with other films. With that being said, I personally would recommend this film to others who enjoy watching cult films because I think that Eating Raoul is a perfect example of cult film. The audience will be able to watch the plot develop through out the film and get some laughs in as a bonus.
