Based on two wildly different takes of the same story, Eden explores one of the longest-standing and most compelling human mysteries ever where eight people went to an island, and less than half survive. In between the two world wars, German philosopher, DR. FRIEDRICH RITTER, becomes a news sensation after abandoning civilization and moving to the remote island of Floreana in the Galapagos with his disciple and lover, DORE STRAUCH. Their incredible dedication to the pursuit of a better life and a new model for society inspires HEINZ WITTMER, a widower and veteran of brutal trench warfare, to also flee to the Galapagos and build anew. He and his resourceful young new wife, MARGRET, arrive on the island along with Heinz's sickly son HARRY. Unlike Ritter and Dore, they are not survivalists, and have no experience living off the land. They come with how-to books and big dreams. This immediately triggers the wrath of Dr. Ritter & Dore, who have no interest in having neighbors and deeply resent the intrusion. Just as these family units strike a balance to peacefully coexist, along comes ELOISE WAGNER DE BOUSQUET, a bold and mysterious self-proclaimed heiress known as THE BARONESS. She arrives with a small harem of men in tow, who are both her lovers and her workers, depending on her mood. The Baroness has grand plans to erect a luxury hotel for the ultra-rich. Like Dr. Ritter, she wants the island to herself, and uses dirty tactics to harass the other inhabitants into leaving. Things turn ugly when the Baroness' bullying nearly causes Margret to die during childbirth, and it becomes clear that she will stop at nothing to claim the island. With their family's survival at stake, the Wittmers are forced to engage in an intense and increasingly dangerous conflict. The results are surprising and even shocking.

Michael Rechtshaffen The Hollywood Reporter Howard and screenwriter Pink shipwreck the Queensland-shot vehicle in a mishmash of styles. Neither quite satire nor thriller nor murder mystery, the film cries out for a sharper attack. Sep 16, 2024 Full Review Kate Erbland indieWire No film about the utter demise of a supposed utopia -- a real one, to boot! -- and the utter infallibility of human beings should be this fun, but we’re lucky this one is. Rated: B Sep 10, 2024 Full Review Maureen Lee Lenker Entertainment Weekly Here, the end result is more of an erratic blend of survival drama, historical oddity, and petty domestic intrigue that boils down into a morass of standout moments dragged down by the film's weaknesses as a whole. Rated: C+ Sep 9, 2024 Full Review Beatrine Shahzad Discussing Film Ron Howard's latest thriller has memorable performances from its star-studded cast but sadly lacks any thematic focus. So, it's neither a disaster nor a success, only another forgettable film. Rated: 3/5 Nov 30, 2024 Full Review Ethan Dayton That Shelf If anything, Eden will hopefully encourage those of us who’ve never heard of the Galapagos Affair to look into this deeply layered history, which is far more interesting than the movie presents their story to be. Nov 1, 2024 Full Review Erik Childress Movie Madness Podcast Once again, Ron Howard seems fully uncommitted in engaging with the rooted politics inherent in the story, leaving his characters, other than Ana De Armas, to dry out on the less engaging Mosquito Coast Rated: 2/4 Oct 4, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews
