What to Know

Critics Consensus

Karla Sofía Gascón is Emilia Perez in a swaggering musical crime thriller of genre-bending fascination that is also an unapologetically trans story.

Stephen Romei The Australian It’s cheesy and loopy and fun to watch but I think its Oscar buzz is a bit over the top. Rated: 3/5 Jan 17, 2025 Full Review Leonard Maltin leonardmaltin.com Phrases like “game-changer” and “cutting-edge” can’t capture just how audacious and original Emilia Pérez is. It's a knockout. Dec 22, 2024 Full Review Mark Kermode Kermode and Mayo's Take (YouTube) On paper, the story sounds like a mashup of Dog Day Afternoon, Sicario, M Butterfly, and Mrs. Doubfire, which really should not work. The fact that it does, is a testament to the audacity of the production and Karla Sofía Gascón. Nov 22, 2024 Full Review Kiko Martinez San Antonio Current Part crime thriller, eccentric musical and campy Spanish-language novella ... Emilia Pérez pulls no punches with its incredible visuals and gender- and genre-bending bravado. Rated: B+ Jan 21, 2025 Full Review Simon Miraudo Movie Squad (RTRFM 92.1) There are a lot of bad faith takes out there for Emilia Pérez, many I don't agree with, so please know I have zero malice in my heart and do not gain any benefit by saying this truly stinks. Rated: 1.5/5 Jan 17, 2025 Full Review Cris Kennedy Inner East Review French auteur filmmaker Jacques Audiard is doing so many things and isn't afraid to try out ideas, or to put together a scene that serves a bigger ideal even if rough around the edges. Thomas A Some admirable sequences and performances, but yeesh. The terrible script undermines any of the good work. Offensively mashes together very serious political human issues with a kind of bad soap opera plotting that has no idea what it's trying to say, and does a corny job saying even that much. One of the worst films I've seen. Jaw-droppingly bad and also just kinda boring. Given the subject matter it should have been riveting, but the execution felt like a bad tv special. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/19/25 Full Review Rob Liked…great story and acting… everything was unexpected from the plot twist, singing and dancing …drama, action and music… the appeal is so broad… International hit!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/14/25 Full Review Regis M Not for everyone UFO kind of movie. But it's perfect. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/24/24 Full Review Patrick H Incredibly original, beautifully filmed, compelling story and amazing acting. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/16/24 Full Review lionel g Inventive , captivating, touching and much more . Zoe Saldana steals the movie Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/02/24 Full Review Josh C Best movie of the year! Audacious, powerful, wild, unpredictable, a cinematic spectacle with so much to say. I'll be shocked if it's not up for Best Picture this year. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/12/24 Full Review Read all reviews
