Critics Consensus

Karla Sofía Gascón is Emilia Perez in a swaggering musical crime thriller of genre-bending fascination that is also an unapologetically trans story.

Adam Kempenaar Filmspotting Whatever its failings are as a musical, Emilia Perez makes up for it as a tragic melodrama. Rated: 3.5/5 Feb 15, 2025 Full Review Jack Hamilton Slate Rather than enhancing the film’s narrative, the music functions as a loud and gimmicky distraction from storytelling that can’t be bothered to do even the most basic work of connecting its audience to its setting and characters. Jan 23, 2025 Full Review Stephen Romei The Australian It’s cheesy and loopy and fun to watch but I think its Oscar buzz is a bit over the top. Rated: 3/5 Jan 17, 2025 Full Review Alexandra Parker Mediaversity Reviews Several great movies centering trans characters came out in 2024. Yet it is Emilia Pérez that has soaked up all the awards attention. Rated: F Feb 13, 2025 Full Review Armond White National Review Audiard has referred to his script as a libretto, but Emilia Pérez stretches past operatic goofiness. Each aria-song, through middling Latin pop and rap hybrids, expresses the egomania of sociopaths. Feb 8, 2025 Full Review Nicolás Medina Montevideo Portal / Latido Beat Emilia Pérez does not ask for forgiveness or permission. What she offers is a unique experience, one that challenges both the viewer and the current cinematic landscape. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 10/10 Feb 7, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews

j Not the most exciting movie in the world Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/21/25 Full Review Thomas A Some admirable sequences and performances, but yeesh. The terrible script undermines any of the good work. Offensively mashes together very serious political human issues with a kind of bad soap opera plotting that has no idea what it's trying to say, and does a corny job saying even that much. One of the worst films I've seen. Jaw-droppingly bad and also just kinda boring. Given the subject matter it should have been riveting, but the execution felt like a bad tv special. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/19/25 Full Review Rob Liked…great story and acting… everything was unexpected from the plot twist, singing and dancing …drama, action and music… the appeal is so broad… International hit!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/14/25 Full Review Regis M Not for everyone UFO kind of movie. But it's perfect. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/24/24 Full Review Patrick H Incredibly original, beautifully filmed, compelling story and amazing acting. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/16/24 Full Review lionel g Inventive , captivating, touching and much more . Zoe Saldana steals the movie Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/02/24 Full Review Read all reviews
