Will Sharpe, Noémie Merlant, and Naomi Watts star in the sultry tale of one woman's search for lost pleasure. While on business in Hong Kong Emmanuelle meets Kei, a man who constantly eludes her. Though she indulges in the many alluring distractions the city has to offer, she can't shake their chance encounter. Will she submit to her basest desires to forge a deeper relationship? Audrey Diwan's film, freely adapted from Emmanuelle Arsan's novel, casts a female gaze on the intimate quest of the woman whose name still evokes one of cinema's most provocative characters.

Critics Consensus

Bitterly disappointing given the talent involved, this modern take on Emmanuelle is an erotic odyssey with no sizzle.

It’s a tepid piece, nowhere near daring enough. Go to Full Review

To audiences mature enough to remember the 1970s franchise just this side of soft-core porn, the project will feel like a big-screen prawn cocktail: a cultural relic reimagined. Everyone else may simply be puzzled. Go to Full Review

That a filmmaker who previously displayed such a deep understanding of the pleasures and burdens of the female body is behind this tepid exercise in desire is a great shock — and an even bigger shame. Go to Full Review

Audrey Diwan’s return to directing after her triumph at the Biennale is somewhat bittersweet, though by no means lacking in virtues. [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Mumbles rather than purrs as it seeks to be such an inoffensive update to Arsan’s novel that it rids itself entirely of all evidence of seduction. Go to Full Review

I believe Emmanuelle is supposed to have a rich, succulent, unspoken inner life. Teensy bits of it emerge via Nobody Talks Like This dialogue that’s so clumsy, it makes Baby Huey look like Baryshnikov. Go to Full Review

thiago s Nov 11 Filme fraco, o roteiro é fraco, as cenas são fracas, a história é fraca, o elenco é fraco, e ninguém ajuda a melhorar o filme, os personagens são fracos, e o filme deveria ter cenas bem melhores e relevantes, para fazer o filme ser bom See more Vince P Oct 13 On the one hand, this is a first rate "period piece", which I write in quotes because the setting is of the present. But it shows in beautiful detail the world of high end hotels, which is something that precious few of us would ever access. The camera work here is gorgeous. Personally I found Merlant to be quite beautiful and she is in her prime and physically flawless, and they make sure to leverage that to great effect in repeated scenes featuring intercourse, oral, and masturbation. The other actors contribute consistently believable if understated performances, and it's all directed with a slow burn into a plot direction one doesn't really expect. But... that's where the joy stops. The problem with this film is the script. I don't know what they were thinking. It dabbles with being part soft-core porn, part social/business drama, and part erotic romance; but it doesn't do any of those justice. Even more disappointingly, it leaves EVERY arc in the air at the end of the movie with only probabilities left to the viewer so they can make up whatever ending they like I suppose. It had the potential to be more, to be a statement. Instead they abdicate all responsibility for resolution of the various stories and feck off into the sunset on a carnal note. I was not amused, nor impressed, nor taken with the poignancy of it. They could have done all three, but choose instead to impart ambiguity itself as a first class outcome. I'm sure it was done quite on purpose, but it was a poor choice. Sure, life is messy, choices are not always satisfying, and that is a fine thing to impose upon the characters in the movie, but not the audience. The writing is just lazy and this is not a complete movie in its current state. Unless you like that sort of thing, I recommend staying away from this one. See more tony b Aug 8 Turgid, self conscious and dull. It’s about as erotic as Thomas The Tank Engine. The dialogue is stilted, pretentious and tedious. This film has nothing to offer but it probably doesn’t care. See more Maria R Apr 20 So nice and sexy and the actors are increadible! Now we get weird faced Merlant who has the sexappeal of Bubbles from Trailer Park Boys. Hollywood is officially out of ideas. See more Joaquim M Mar 8 I felt this remake was just ok. Their wasn't much to the characters though i felt the sexual scenes were enjoyable. See more Read all reviews
