Critics Consensus

The Emperor's New Groove isn't the most ambitious animated film, but its brisk pace, fresh characters, and big laughs make for a great time for the whole family.

norriskeel still funny after all these years my step son actually sat through the whole thing amazing Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/11/22 Full Review Donavin D Disney was in their prime during the 2D animation era — only banger after banger of huge epics, beautifully realized worlds and infinitely memorable songs that still live on to this day, and somehow The Emperors New Groove stands out as one of my personal favorites. The irreverent humor, the simple but stylized animation and almost every voice actor pulling double duty to be the most random yet amazingly assembled cast. I refuse to start this review without highlighting that this film has one of the most perfect duos in film history, Yzma and Kronk — the dynamic they have as genius and singular brain celled assistant is one as old as time but their chemistry is unforgettable and overflowing and its carries more than its weight throughout the film. I am normally not a fan of David Spade but him as the self centered and lazy emperor is perfect and I couldn’t imagine anyone else doing it as well and for my money, its his best ever performance (I said what I said). The art style being a blend of Inca-inspired design, which was completely foreign and new to me at the time, and its geometric and brightly colored palette stand out visually from other Disney films at the time. While the landscapes are large lush and beautiful, they aren’t as complicated as some other Disney films at the time but it’s immensely charming and the setting helps it easily stands out. The story is mostly enjoyable, with Kuzco having to team up with Patcha, the man he wronged to help each other out. However, Kuzco and Pacha’s dynamic isn’t as emotionally or comedically engaging, aside from a few standout moments. I constantly found myself waiting for scenes with Kronk and Yzma — or even Kuzco’s interactions with them — since their chemistry is infectious and elevates every moment they’re on screen. The Emperors New Groove is one of those movies from Disney’s early catalog that stood out to me as a kid and remains one of the funnier Disney movies I still catch myself rewatching and humming along to. From beautifully unique character designs and settings to one of the best duos in film history with Yzma and Kronk, it’s a fantastic film with lots of laughs. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/06/25 Full Review TROY S Emperor's New Groove is Disney's funniest film, with great comedy, lovable characters, and a heartfelt story. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/30/25 Full Review Landon W I like this movie but the only 1 problem is kuzco why? Because he pisses people off like seriously people got pissed off by kuzco First: Patcha & Now: Yzma (the villain) Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/29/25 Full Review Mr.Mango O. Super well done! love the animation. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/16/25 Full Review Slavomir T Funny, clever, and heartfelt. Everything a good animated movie should be.
