Me parece que uno de los sub géneros mas interesantes para navegar son las historias basadas en hechos reales tan surrealistas que acaban siendo una oda o un POV al socialismo de dicha época en la que transcurren los hechos, en este caso los 80's, Dito Montiel hace un trabajo excepcional en introducir al espectador a dicha época, desde el inicio con una tipografía muy parecía a la de "Miami Vice" o con planos abiertos a la ciudad que rodea a los personajes. Todo esto explorando la extraordinaria historia de Chris Potamitis, con el mayor robo en la historia de USA. Pero que hay mas allá de esta historia, para mi la trama de la película refleja las pobres armas que las grandes empresas le dan a sus encargados de la seguridad para operar, por un sueldo medianamente bajo por el trabajo que realizan. Liam Hemsworth hace un gran trabajo al encarnar a un joven vulnerable pero lleno de ira, segado por la avaricia y por un sentido de "justicia" ambiguo. Rodeado de personajes muy interesantes como Eddie, Mike o Spyro, cada personaje a pesar de tener su distintiva personalidad hay una constante "motivación" en su personalidad "El Dinero Fácil", me parece que uno de los principales mensajes de la película está en que no existe tal cosa como "El Dinero Fácil", literalmente con Chris y Eddie eventualmente siendo capturados y Metafóricamente como "Mike", siendo asesinado por la misma causante. "Empire State" para mi es una joya perdida en los grandes blockbusters de la trayectoria de Liam Hemsworth y Dwayne Johnson, tiene una historia atrapante que maneja muy bien sus tempos, sabe cuando ser graciosa, cuando ser seria y cuando ser satírica, todo ello envuelto en Montajes increíbles que llevan al espectador a los barrios bajos de USA en los 80's con una banda sonora espectacularmente bien añadida. Si, tiene sus fallos, la película a pesar de durar hora y media deja de ser propositiva y se encarga de sobre exponer a los personajes y el conflicto en si, añadiendo que aunque la historia en si es fascinante no deja de ser simple y repetitiva con otras películas de crimen. Esta película es un claro ejemplo de que volteando a ver el periódico o las noticias de vez en cuando encontrarás historias tan alucinantes que vale la pena representar en pantalla.

Montiel's worked through this type of tough guy material before, yet there's still no sign of creative growth. Maybe it's time for the filmmaker to move out of New York City and see what the rest of the country is up to.
