Audience Member Extremely gripping and very well acted Danish film is no easy watch as it's cutting no corners. Jesper Christensen is sublime and proves that he's not only one of the best Danish actors, but one of the best, period. It's a film about overcoming illness, staying together as a family and about giving up hopes and dreams to support your loved ones. Pernille Fischer Christensen is a very talented director and she orchestrates the film beautifully and sure-footed. If you can handle a tough, no-holds-barred drama, A Family delivers and stays with you afterwards. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Very well directed. And exceptionally performed by the entire cast! Jesper Christensen is Denmark's greatest actor. Very good script. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Pernille Fischer Christensen offers a traditional but excellent family drama about the Reinwalds, proud owners of a family bakery with a history of several generations. The story begins with a celebration: family patriarch Rikard (Jesper Christensen) has just recovered from a long struggle against cancer and finally marries his new girlfriend. Meanwhile Ditte (Lene Maria Christensen), the art-scouting daughter of Rikard is planning a move to new York with her fiancé Peter (Pilou Asbæk). The viewer gets to experience the closeness and happiness of a family that is exclusively content (no outsiders in the wedding). We learn to like these characters from early on, which makes the tragic twist all the more effective. Rikard's cancer has returned, untreatable. Urgent sorrow takes the place of hope. Ditte arrives at a dead end: she wants to move to NYC, her father wants her to take over the family business. As I mentioned before, "En familie" is quite a traditional family drama but an excellent one. The Christensen team makes the story come alive in a unique manner, through Pernille's competent direction and some acting between Jesper and Lene Maria that is so excellent it's no wonder the pair are father and daughter in real life as well. The rest of the cast is extremely competent as well, making us believe every emotion we are shown. Here is a movie with intimate, personal but heavy themes. It's absolutely genuine, conveying immense warmth and immense sorrow with equal effectiveness. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member Death in a family is something everyone is sure to experience at one point in one's life. Life does go on... Phew... I have enjoyed the movie from begining to end but fear this will be one of those soon to be forgotten in my memory.
